Feel free to use this mod:

5 slots:
hat
shirt
pants
cape
accessory
would free up 5 existing inventory slots, which would make a big difference without unbalancing the game.
FWIW, I recently realized that cooked serpent meat has a stack size of 50, but it weighs a ton.
Or they could just add 5 slots. Even easier.
Are we going to go around that track again...
the paper doll provides a logical figure. otherwise, why not add 4 slots. or 6, or 10. it becomes arbitrary. the doll functionality anchors the figure, provides a logical basis for the change.
What benefit does "a logical figure" provide to gameplay? Can I store other stuff in those slots if I don't want to wear a cape or use an "accessory", for example? Can I easily swap out armor pieces?
Why do you think a "logical basis" is required? Why not 4, 6, 10? What's to stop them from just changing 5 slots into armor slots?
Adding armor slots wouldn't be a bad thing if it didn't take away anything that we have now (like quickly and easily swapping armor pieces), but I don't see any reason that it would be better than just added additional general slots.
Maybe Hilder could sell a backpack when you bring back the last chest. That would at least make her useful.
I actually did play a game recently using the map so that I could do the Hilder quest, and enjoyed it very much (the quests, not using the map), but don't see anything I would actually want to buy from her.
now additional slots is another story. 1 of two mods i use is the equipment slots mod. it is a nice addition, and should be integrated into the game.
I used to add slots using V+, but that leads to problems if you hop into a world that's not running the mod.
yeah i stopped using that mod. that was the feature i was using it for. with the equipment slots mod, and plant everything, the game is perfect.
Could certainly use 5-6 extra slots from equipable gear .
The same reasons countless other games have used paper dolls for decades. The main purpose of the paper doll is to make a distinction between items carried in a pack and items you put on your person, to be logically congruent with real life in a way that is satisfying. It is disastisfying from a logical standpoint that running around in a loincloth frees up more actual carrying space (not just weight) and that putting on apparel leaves you with less carrying space.
It's also more organized as you're not cluttering up your general inventory with items you would, in most cases, never interact with until it's time to replace them; and it's more satisfying and organized to have a visual representation in the UI of empowering or protective apparel on your person arranged according to where they go on your body than it is to just have icons in your general inventory highlight to represent that they're equipped.
The fact that the game's inventory space feels too limited for some people just makes the lack of a paper doll stand out to them all the more. But the main purpose of a paper doll has never been to just add more inventory slots that are restricted to only certain items.
