Same with some of the materials. There are plenty of silver there and it's easy to mine, but once you upgrade your silver gear and couple of things, there's no point for you to mine it any more. Why not make few decorative items at least that require silver?
And what about ancient tree barks? They look so cool, yet we can't even use it in buildings in anyway... Can't even make some cool looking greeny furniture with it... At least you use Fine Wood for furniture, why not making Ancient Tree useful as well?
Bronze nails can be used to create item stands and can be used to hold items that glow for no fuel light (drake eggs and swamp keys are fairly bright).
Resin is used as fuel for torches and sconces which will keep greylings, wild boars and graydwarves (except for brutes and shaman) at bay it is also used to make some other items, Fire arrows do more damage than any other pre-frost arrow projectile. Graydwarf eyes are used as a food ingredient later in the game and for portals. Bone fragments are useful again in the late game and all surplus items can be thrown into an obliterator and used to create a smaller amount of coal.
Surplus gold coins can be used as decor and silver necklaces are required for the treasure chest decorative item.
