Or you consider that no UI wind indicator is worthy of a viking, get rid of the indicator on the mini-map (for self-consistency) and add up some ribbons on the mast and stays.
I put this in the "be careful what you ask for" group. And I don't think it is the slightest bit weird that the wind direction arrow appears on the mini-map but not on the main map.
The mini-map is part of the user interface. The user interface is updated every time something changes like a viking's current health and stamina levels, countdown timers for food, positive and negative states in effect with their countdown timers, the damage status of weapons and tools in the hotbar, and whatever.
The main map is a document depicting what landmarks and terrain a viking has discovered. To my knowledge, the only changes made automatically to the main map are the revelation of existing terrain as a viking comes within visual range, the location of Haldor when a viking comes within a certain range, and the location of altars when a viking inspects a vegvesir. A viking may manually update this map with markers. Variable information such as the location of leviathans and wind direction are not shown for the simple reason that they are not permanent.
As a general rule, I do not sail with the main map open. When it is open, I cannot see shoals, sandbars, leviathans, sea serpents, and other navigation hazards. I might briefly open it if I become temporarily disoriented but in that circumstance I am not looking for the wind direction.
I do not sail with the map open for the same reason I do not text while driving my car: I do not like to court disaster.
Asked many times, too: just a minimap wind indicator replica, nothing new, no new tool to write at all.
AFAIK, main map also show moving clouds which, staying at your description, it shouldn't show at all (that's also the "reason" people use, when someone ask to have the wind indicator in the main map: "there are moving clouds already").
At that point, being the main map a "dynamic screen" anyway, it seems not that wrong, to me, to have a wind indicator too (e.g. for the times there are no clouds in sight on it, 'cause of the zoom, or when they move too slowly).
