Oceans & Sailing
An update to the game's ocean biome is presumably a good deal further down on the development schedule. That hasn't kept a lot of players from thinking about it though, so here is your chance to dream big.

Add all of your seaworthy suggestions here:
  • Ship designs
  • Enemies from the shallows and the deep
  • Boss design & Forsaken power
  • Weapons & armour
  • Biome-specific buffs / debuffs
  • Resources for food & crafting
  • Wildlife
  • Activities
  • ....and whatever else you can come up with

As usual, there are no guarantees that even popular suggestions make it into the game, but you never know what might catch IG's collective eyes.

This is a Megathread. Threads with similar topics will get merged with it.

Tarring boats.
Nothing too revolutionary, but since there already is tar in the game. Why not make it an upgrade for boats, more speed and bit more durability. I really dislike using longship as a solo, so I would like to make karve a bit better.
+1
Being able to sleep on any of the boats.

The suggestions in game already state we should not be out at night, but if you are sailing, you can be on that boat well past a game day. I'm not saying we should get comfort bonuses, but sleeping would be nice.

This would also negate any perceived 'need' for bow lighting which is not historical; and yes, I realize the irony of that in a fantasy game.
Ship decorations
Hi,

please allow players to decorate external surface of the ships with shield according to nordic lore. See examples:

Boat customisation (Longship and Karve)
1/ Add shield stands to the ship's broadsides.
2/Different ship sails (craft ships in workbench like 'custom coloured shields', then placed on water).
3/ A slope at the bow of the ship allows access without jumping on to the lookout-point.
Not a bad idea and I concur, though for bigger effectivity I recommend doing the suggestion through their discord channel. It is there for just these things, after all. :cozyspaceengineersc:
Why did Vikings hang their shields along the gunwales of their ships? Could it be to save space inside the ship?

Does a Valheim Viking have the same problem? No.

Aesthetics +1. Practical value 0.
Ships with slots for mounts so you can easily move them between islands.

Maybe a bit harder: Have other players in the longship help rowing when against the wind.

Could perhaps add some protection from giant mosquitoes or sea monsters..?

1. Add the ability to put shields on the side of ships to give more armour
2. Draugr ships who can shoot arrows at you. Including fire arrows.
3. Kraken as a sea boss (it was a giant octopus thing that attacked ships by climbing on the side, from Norse mythology so fits in with the game), maybe as a boss power gives you something related to sailing (wind in your favour or faster sailing speed)
4. Put the ability to place oars on the side and be able to row the boat.
5. Biome specific debuff could be "salty" where you feel dehydrated from the splashing salt water and you need to take drink with you to keep you not salty. The debuff could cause your food timers to go quicker (so instead of the food lasting 10m it only lasts 7m)
6. Activities could be building fishing nets and crab boxes which you can throw over board to gather fish and seashell creatures. So one person throws over the net on board and catches fish as you sail along.
7. Add some decoration pieces for ships, such as ship heads, or coloured sails.
8. Add the ability for the boat to drift away and an anchor so it stops doing that
9. Allow piles of resources to be place on ships (such as wood and stone) so it doesn't take up space in the hold
10. Scaled armour set from serpent scales.
Perhaps combine a few ideas here; let's say one of the Vanir sends a dream to our Viking telling them how to create a special shield. The shield cannot be wielded, but can be mounted on a longboat or better ship. Each ship would have a maximum number of shields that could be mounted. Each shield mounted would give +1% (cumulative) resistance to pierce and slash damage also would increase rowing speed by 1%.

Perhaps the shields might manifest spectral spirits who assume the position of rowers next to their shield (purely aesthetic).

I just had an amazing play through building boats with this mod.

All i could think about was..

What if?

What if the devs built this feature into the game with pieces that are meant for boat building?

An opportunity to have every player to row when sailing on a longship, so it boosts the speed of the ship based on how many players are rowing is everything I can ever ask for.

THIS, yes, we need this. It's my most wanted feature.
Just here to bump my idea of a longboat-mounted serpent skull/trophy war drum that can be used to increase chances of summoning another serpent (and because the idea of sailing onto the beach beside a Fuling village with war drums pounding would be freaking awesome.)
put at least a drag rope on the side that doesn't have a ladder, so you could at least maybe jump in, or at worst pull yourself in. I've argued this one before, and the practical reality is that no-one is willing to die for it. For no reason would a sailor not have a way back into the boat even if they were not on the side with a ladder. Not allowing entrance from either side is just griefing.
And I don't even sail that much, but it's still silly to think I'd drown to not have a rope on the opposite side, best believe i'd put a rope there. Because I would.
