The capability is already there in the game for player melee attacks to have vertical aiming. We know it's there because bows can do so. It can be modded in for all player weapons with literally just one config setting change, and from all accounts it appears to work great.

So unless they say otherwise, this is a design decision.
This mod works, and it should be integrated into the game.

Then that's a really strange design decision because the hitboxes of player weapons are pretty darned small and there are a lot of poke/stab attacks that are not viable on most of the terrain you will be fighting on.

Guess I'll have to go give this mod a try. Thanks!

As a disclaimer, I've not tried this in Mistlands. It works well everywhere else; vertical aiming works as you would expect. This is a problem with a lot of game engines. The good news is that the mod requires no additional configuration and it does not need to be updated constantly.

I think they haven't done it yet for 2 reasons mainly:
1. It would take a lot of time and effort to develop and balance out.
2. Some weapons, like spears, would become obsolete (again balance issue).
adding "looking up and down" would take a lot of time and effort to develop and balance out?

wut?

I have a newfound appreciation for spears recently but damn the primary attack needs a buff. The attack range is barely longer than the knife which seems to defeat the entire purpose of it being a long stabby weapon. Give it an underhand stabbing attack similar to the aetgir and give the aetgir a bit more of a slashing primary (a downwards cleave combo maybe) and everything will fall into place. The spear can fulfill it's purpose as the pierce weapon and the big hewing polearm as the long range chopping weapon.
Yeah, the primary attack has atrocious reach and is terrible on slopes (like all melee weapons), but it's a) super fast and b) spears are one of the cheapest weapons to craft and upgrade, the silver-tier spear in particular is very cheap.

Every time I start a new game, I tell myself I'm going to use a different weapon, but I always end up going back to the spear eventually due to its versatility.
I agree. There should be some sort of radius where they can get hit from

I hate leveling up daggers just to find out that they're practically useless once I get into the swamp

I suck at parrying. If I fail once against a Draugr, well, if I don't have like 85 health, I am screwed.

It basically forces you to start using swords and bow after Black Forest.

Also, this kind of issue is frustrating as well when you want to cut wood but you're swinging your axe above the log at your feet. The game should know what you would like to do, and it should just then default to a chopping straight down movement. Would also save on stamina since you're aided by gravity on the swing down, so stamina drain should slow downward, and speed up drawing back

Lotta things they're not done implementing into the game. Some of this stuff will likely be incrementally implemented since they'll have to test each update for bugs, and this would be a big update.

There's not even a real need to add new animations. Just expand the vertical window of existing weapon swings.
Fighting On Elevation
The games melee combat has always suffered when attempting to fight enemies at marginally different elevations that the player character. Now that the mist lands is out, it has introduced extreme versions of this problem. In it's landscapes, and dungeons, the way that the melee combat works has made it very difficult to fight things higher and lower that your character. Even when it seems you should be hitting your enemy sometimes your weapon with touch or go through the enemy and not hit them.

Edit: Making enemies not take reduced damage when hitting objects would be cool as well, as it's hard to hit the new bug enemies without hitting the walls of cliffs.

TLDR: Please make it easier to hit things when they are either higher or lower than you.

Directional combat
Would be nice if we could hit up and down...
I know there is a mod for that, anybody have tested it?

Being able to hit up and down it something that developers should focus 100% after Mistlands. It never bothered me before, but now there are so many situations where I end up not being able to hit your enemy in Mistlands.

I'm interested in that mod too. If someone knows it, please tell us. :steamhappy:
It's called Slope Combat Fix, it just unlocks the players y axis similar to how the enemies already are. I haven't used it but if I ever play again I probably will, sounds like it isn't perfect but its a significant improvement.

Possibly try to separate the way weapons and tools damage objects, versus enemies, so when fighting on slopes or tight corridors you can get more out of the weapons damage. Even with the "heavy" attacks, they can still easily hit the ground, or the ceiling, and ruin a well timed strike.

Attacking towards camera center
One thing I have always found annoying with Valheim is that the character will attack towards the direction they are facing, and not toward the camera. It has always been a thorn in my side, being unable to hit enemies who are simply at a different elevation, trying to move through the attack animations before finally swinging my sword overhead so I can hit wolves in the mountain, for example.

With the introduction of highly-vertical combat with Mistlands this is pretty much inexcusable. If I want to hit a Tick for example, it's quite difficult to make sure I'm at the exact perfect elevation to melee strike them when in reality all my character would have to do is swing low or high. It's a real pain.

I'm sure this has been suggested before but recently I feel it's necessary to reiterate.
There's a mod that does this, and, I actually don't like it. Camera aiming while third person is a pain, especially while zoomed out - and sometimes you just need to be able to watch your back as well. Where I want to aim and where I want the camera can be two different things.

Personally I think I'd prefer hitbox adjustments instead.
