Devs - Beds - destroy
Okay, it's absolutely stupid that I can't destroy a bed without a hammer. It causes people to be locked into an infinite death loop.

EVERYTHING doesn't need to require a hammer/workbench and crafting setup.

Yeah i'm very confused by this topic. You can just simply take an ax to the thing, like almost everything else.

You can't always do that. If you die, and respawn there and soemthing is attacking there, and you can't get a hammer made, you will wind up in an infinite death loop.

If the bed is on level ground, you can't even punch it, not even kneeling.

You option becomes: log out and log into a different map. Shouldn't have to do that.

Especially great in the mountains when you can't leave the respawn without freezing to death.

How about kicking it? I've never tried that, but it seems like it might work.

Didn't try that, but I will when I log in next time out of curiosity.

But, this does kind of highlight my point. We shouldn't have to look for hoops to go through and you shouldn't be able to get stuck like this over a respawn point. It was also around 200 hours into the game before this became an issue for anyone in my group that plays. I just happened to draw the short straw lol.

There are two different issues that interfer in your case:
  1. To be able to destroy own's bed with a weapon or bare hands, either before committing suicide (/die or in a fight) to respawn at starting location, or just to get unstuck: ALWAYS POSSIBLE (except perhaps if badly stuck (given hitboxes).
  2. To wake up (or respawn) and get stuck in something that was built too close to the bed, because currently, character stands up on the bed: until this changes, you can only attempt also to destroy the building blocks that get you stuck (most probably a floor or roof tile block), and perhaps this is not possible with just bare hands, given hitboxes.
As a workaround, you can use a console command if console mode is allowed in this game.

Death loops are a problem, if it's an enemy right by the bed I guess the only straightforward option is zerg punching - don't they wander off in search of workbenches to vandalise though?

Beds on the floor you can kick to pieces I think.

Design the base/home/outpost in a better way so that mobs can't end up next to your bed. (They are attracted to light sources, tamed creatures, and workbenches first. After these are gone, walls are their go to. Place these sort of things in strategic areas.)

Build your bed on an upper floor.

Kicking damages short things. It's your alternate attack when unarmed. Middle mouse button by default.

If your spawn is in the mountains and you worry about freezing to death, plan for this. Eat some food in your base before running back to your tombstone. A quick bite, and a resting buff will heal you up. Didn't stock up on food? Thats a silly way to live in a dangerous environment :P

Heck there is a forgiveness window even when taking on the 'freezing' buff. It doesn't just instantly start smashing you like a troll. Run! Dart out your front door and run the quickest path from bed to another biome, and THEN head to your tombstone.

Surround your bed house with tamed wolves.

Don't have a base where you have it if you've gone till now without issue.

Wait long enough, I'm sure whatever is killing you will kill your bed, haha.

I completely get that there are many what-ifs that could have been put in place. They are cop-outs and excuses for a bad design that requires you to have a hammer to break a bed. It's a box with straw in it, just make destroying without a hammer not give the mats back or something.

The forgiveness window for the freezing buff is irrelevant depending on how far into the cold you are.

A situation happened that allowed for an infinite death loop for around 45 minutes. Did it require a mistake on my end to happen? Yes. Should it be able to happen once identified? No.

Pointing out a flaw isn't insulting and criticizing the game and threatening to leave, so stop defending it :)

While it's not the most elegant fix, the game design does allow for world hopping in these circumstances. Stepping into the reality next door to grab a hammer seems like a better option than 45 minutes of groundhog day.

Seriously, in place of OP, I wouldn't have thought about that.

I already spent a long time preparing for a corpse recovery, back to initial spawning location, recrafting and rebuilding all (well, troll armour, flint weapon set, raft), while developping a new recovery base, and hunting for all the materials. Reason why is that I died after having destroyed my bed and forget to rebuild one or tagged another one nearby, the other time was when i died at swimming, and my respawn island was devoided of materials to craft another raft...

But just disconnecting and reconnecting to a fresh world before dying again?

I hate how that has to be suggested so much here, tbh. Don’t like hauling resources for a 60 min voyage? Just switch worlds. The game should be made to be fun for everyone, even if it requires creative solutions to still keep the underlying restrictions in place.
