The devs seem to think otherwise. It's a fantasy game of norse mythology and totally NOT real world.
But of course it is your decision not to use them, but they're definitely not out-of-place. You just don't happen to like them. Which is perfectly fine.
Wrong on multiple accounts:
1) Nowhere in Norse mythology is there magic portals for teleporting.
2) Developer Iron Gate Studio found a particular pressure point when they came to design its portals, which instantly teleport players across the game world. “We redesigned them several times because we didn’t want people to use them too much,” co-founder Henrik Törnqvist tells me.

So clearly the developers are caught between trying to create a "convenience" system to appease gamers with ADHD and how they want people to play the game: not using portals. Pretty much every single player creates a "portal hub" with dozens of portals for every possible destination - based on what I've read about Iron Gate's vision for their game ... this isn't what they intended.
It doesn't matter what is and what isn't Norse mythology. The game is based on Norse mythology. It's not a documentary on Norse mythology. It is not meant to be 100% accurate. It's just meant to give you the feeling and idea. It's a fantasy game. So take the "fantasy" element more to heart, than what Norse isn't. Also, it doesn't matter whether portals were initially intended or not. Early Access always creates the availability to evolve one's work and not everyone is going to like it. That's just how the world works. You please some, and you piss off others.
However, I DO agree that the developers should add more functions to the administration of multiplayer games and allow the customization of world creation in their dedicated server maps, later in their development. Eg: toggle features (portals, food buff, etc) on/off and edit variables (food buff %, raid %, player cap, etc).
