Smelting equipment to get materials back
I've lost a lot of valuable materials due to crafting duplicates when I thought I was upgrading something, resulting in me having two level 1 items instead of one level 2 item. This is very frustrating, and I think it would be great to have some way of trashing these items to get some, if not all materials back.

That would actually be kind of cool like some sort of a deconstructor. Empyrion has that very thing

Doesn't even have to give back all of the equipment, but the incentive to use it I imagine would be equally for salvaging materials, as well as trashing obsolete equipment. I've yet to find a way to actually despawn items, so the choice is either to have stuff take up storage space, or let it litter in the wild and accidentally pick it up every now and then. I think I've accidentally crafted two clubs, two hammers, one flint axe, one flint spear, one flimsy bow, one bronze axe and one bronze sword. The wasted bronze hurt the most.

Helpful to know there's a way to do that in the game, but it won't help me for ages still. This function should've been available from the start IMHO, seeing as you can get coal from just overcooking food.

Reverting any metal back would probably change "balance", especially with things like iron and Padded.

Honestly I did this myself a few times before I started to pay attention closely to what I was doing. The button even says craft for crafting and upgrade for upgrade with text above the button to say what it is upgrading to..

The problem comes in, I think, due to the colors being all the same so it is easy to not pay attention to the menus.

The best solution would be to insert a message asking... "are you sure you want to consume x and y items to craft z" that you have to click an additional OK to for crafting.

That may seem awkward adding in a confirmation each time though.... Another more elegant solution might be to have the words "craft" or "upgrade" flash another color when you mouse over the button to pull the eyes toward the identification.

I want this, but this will also change the balance of the game to a large degree. Currently, you cannot carry ores, or metal bars through a portal, but you can carry metal equipment like axes, spears, and armor through.

Adding these would result in the portal's restrictions being bypassed by simply crafting the most metal efficient equipments to bring through it, and resmelting it on the other side.

I forgot about that, you're absolutely right. However, if the materials you get back would be equal to either half of the material cost, or the cost of upgrading the item at its current level (which I assume is half either way) then you could technically bypass the restriction, but you'd only get half the materials, which would, at least to me, be a hard pass.
