It's mirror thinking but you aren't looking at yourself in it. How about elemental damage, mobs resist to slash, etc.? This is decade old rules so for why is it all the sudden an issue?
Similar experience here, even doing it with a friend (who knew to use maces on the boss because he was playing before me, and we even upgraded them too) it took well over an hour due to its huge HP pool, zillions of adds everywhere, swamp terrain being a massive pain in the ass to run around in, and to top it all off constantly dealing with zero stamina because of always being wet; we even tried building little shelters with fires in them but the boss just kept breaking them whenever we dared to actually use it.
The boss itself is not even hard either as long as you know to bring poison resistance mead and use maces, it's just lame on top of lame on top of lame and that's it.
Try to look at it as more finding out what mobs are weak to as a strategic move.
Frankly the Elder should be resistant to everything but fire and axes 🤣
it becomes an issue when an enemy is practically immune to everything that isnt a certain damage type! Im fine with skeletons taking less damage from being stabbed and with fire enemies being immune to fire damage (as it is ONE immunity that is also an optional element), but when out of the blue an enemy becomes resistant to 80% of all damage they take except one damage type (and they have health regen) it becomes a huge issue and ruins the fun completely and forces you to waste hours making a weapon you arent used to using and makes you grind for it to do decent damage this late into the game
You can even do it with a club if you want to, bonemass is trash
