The only issue with the 3rd person camera is building, which is not as precise when compared to Minecraft for example. But I'm sure there are better ways to fix that, than to add 1st person camera.
Not going to tell you no or that you shouldn't play the game that way, I prefer you to play how you want. To help here are a couple links.
Some first person mods are about as close as you can get at the moment.

The only pity is that it's a mod and it has a couple of minor issues.
Generally speaking, the 1st person mode always more immersive by definition.
I'm all for them taking the time to add it in. Not a high priority, but I would certainly welcome it.
And that's fine. The game is perfectly enjoyable in 3rd person, but I agree with the OP that it would also work in 1st.
Currently this is the best we have. Maybe there will be good vr in the future, but right now 3rd person camera is the most realistic and immersive gaming experience for most genres.
But again, the game is fine as it is and I'm not trying to tell you which is "better" or even what is more immersive to YOU.
Why are you so against 1st person view existing and mods in general? It doesn't need to affect you in the slightest, and there is a demand for it from other people. This would even bring more people into the game, ones that were turned away by a lack of a 1st person view, which would give the devs more finances to make the game you enjoy playing better.
It only seems like a win win for you, so what is your problem with it?
Well I certainly can't stop them. But ultimately I want them to experience the game how it was meant to be played (again coming back to artistic vision and integrity). Similarly, I don't want people to buy prints of oil-paintings, nor do I approve of watching films on a small screen tablets. It transforms the original vision in a bad way.
