In-Game Gamma/Brightness/Contrast Settings + Accessibility Options
Regarding: In-Game Gamma/Brightness/Contrast Settings
The devs will maybe implement such settings in the future.

Meanwhile, we ask you to please check your monitor settings! You should be able to adjust gamma/brightness/contrast directly in the settings of your monitor. That's also one of the reasons why these settings are not yet implemented in-game.

Regarding: Accessibility Options
The devs want to improve the accessibility of the game in the future.

If you have a disability or any other factor that affects your experience negatively, you are more than welcome to send us an email to contact@irongatestudio.se and tell us about possible solutions you think would improve your experience. Please start your email subject with "Accessibility Feedback: XY" - Thank you!

Thank you for your contribution to creating a more inclusive experience.

The problem, and reason why an in-game gamma setting is needed is that if you adjust your gamma/brightness for Valheim its going to screw up everything else, with the notable exception of those games that have in-game gamma settings.

The game needs this more than anything else for the simple fact that the only work around to the game being too dark for some people ends up making everything else on their computer too bright/washed out.

Edit: Some people have made comments about the game being bright enough, or even too bright already. Remember that gamma/brightness settings work both ways, Everyone on both ends of the discussion benefit from an in-game setting control.

Gamma setting.
Pretty simple; this game has no way of tuning the darkness of the darkest areas - and Valheim has *many*, *very* dark areas.

This poses particular issue when playing during daylight hours; reflections & general brightness of real world surroundings makes the darkest portions of the game uncomfortable to play.

A simple gamma setting would alleviate this issue.

It's evidently an issue for numerous others, as there are mods that specifically address this issue.

I don't know about others, but I think this is actually a feature. You need the headlamp and while I do get irked when I am trying to build in the sun's direction I just compensate on my building times.

Out of curiosity why not just let mod do the work and not have the designers put in additional code (I am not a coder) that could bleed into other areas of the program?

Let the expert modders do their thing and take advantage of that?

Games that utilize darkness as a mechanic (which is fine), almost all provide a means of calibrating said darkness (via gamma), so that players have a uniform experience.

Whether there exist gameplay mechanics to mitigate the darkness is irrelevant; you need players to be experiencing the same base-level brightness in order to correctly balance any mechanics that offset it.

Can you adjust the Brightness in this game?
I've noticed that the game has a very high contrast, where anything not immediately next to the fireplace in the house I built is pitch black, while the mountain biome is absolutely blinding with its sharp white glare.

It's very straining on the eyes, and I was wondering if you there was any option to soften the sharpness of the light in this game.

No, but according to the Popular Suggestions THread, it's "being considered."

Until then, you'd have to adjust gamma outside of the game, or use a mod that allows you to change it (of which there are a few).

It hadn't even ocurred to me there might be a mod for gamma adjustment.
Just found one on Thunderstore.

Thank you for the tip!

EDIT: just fired up the game with the gamma mod installed.
O.O WOW!!
it didn't just improve the visibility at night it brought out some colors and textures I've never noticed before. This mod just wen ton my "must-have" list.
Now I think I better check the video drivers settings. This makes me think it's defaults might be borked to begine with.
Thank you again,

I tried adjusting my gamma up on my monitor, as I'm on a steam deck and the game doesn't respect the brightness settings. I was appalled to learn that the game will only allow me to change the gamma by one before automatically darkening the screen.

Any help for impaired vision players? need to change the font and text colour and size
My dad got me this game as a gift but I can't read it at all the UI, the lore, etc, all 100% unreadable due to my awful vision
please someone tell me how to change the text settings if it's possible, or recommend me a mod
I need to change it to an accessible font and much larger size

I'd also like to know if it's playable without being able to read any of it
I can't tell if it's because I can't see or if it's because I'm new to the game

Thanks in advance for anyone reading/commenting on this ^-^

Look for "UI Scale" in the settings, at the bottom of the "Misc" tab.

The audio part of the program isn't positional. If you want to use sounds to help you locate targets you'll have to install the Mumble positional audio mod.

Mumble is a VOIP program, like Skype or Teamspeak. The server component is called "Murmur". That mod adds positional audio for Mumble... which allows you to hear your teammates' voices from the direction their character is in.

If UI scaling doesn't work for you, there is a mod called Better UI Reforged that has a number of adjustable features including text size and icon scaling.

I'm looking into it, but it's not a website I trust, and I can't read it
thank you for the idea though :)
