More crew should increase the speed.
Im not into the idea of ghost crew appearing tho, it would kill the immersion.
For a solo player, one can sit at the tiller and row/steer, stand up in the boat doing something other than row/steer, or stand close to the mast and hold on to it. There is only one speed one can row, reverse or the slowest forward speed. The two faster forward speeds are wholly dependent upon whether the sail is halfway or fully lowered. In solo play, when one lowers the sail, the rowing animation stops.
I believe Itharus is saying that in co-op play there is still only one place to sit: at the tiller. The movement speed and direction of the boat is wholly dependent on the one player seated at the tiller. The rest can stand at the mast and hold on or move about the boat scratching their butts but they cannot change the speed or direction of the boat.
I think Itharus is saying there should be rowing stations where additional vikings can sit and row moving the boat faster in reverse and the first forward speed. Since the two faster forward speeds are, at present, totally dependent on the position of the sail, having additional players able to row would not affect them.
Ghost rowers? Perhaps they could give the illusion of more speed.
Yes, this would basically have no effect on solo play. That might be where your ghosts come in some how I guess?
The thing that puts the wind always at your back doesn't help you when you're rowing, though. Better acceleration/deceleration/speed with rowers would just be a nice QOL thing. Obviously being at full sail should remain fastest. Rowing is great when you need agility, though.
