Valheim

Game keeps killing my internet connection when playing online
So when I play Valheim online, I can play for 5 minutes and then I get disconnected from the game AND my computer loses its internet connection altogether, kicking me from Discord or whatever else I'm using. It takes only a few seconds to come back online, but I have to keep relogging and it kills the experience.

I Googled the issue and it seems to be a problem with Valheim / Steam specifically. I followed the "fix" instructions to lower the server browser pings/min setting to 250 (the lowest) and that did help... sort of. I can now play 10-20 minutes without my connection crashing.

Does anyone have a real fix for this?

The weirdest part is, I played last night for about 3 hours and had zero issues. All the problems started today, but nothing has changed on my system. Nothing has been updated.

Other then the tests I mentioned there that you should do, it's most likely an issue with your router, so I would definitely test how your connection would behave while being connected to your mobile internet connection. Turn off your home router (important),enable mobile internet data on your phone, + enable WiFi hot spot or connect phone to the PC via USB cable and enable USB tethering, so that PC can get internet access from the phone network. Test if the same problem happens when connected like that.

That's actually a good idea, thanks! I'll give running off my hotspot a try.

Valheim specifically and or the servers won't cause this.

What is happening? When you're playing valheim online, after some short time the internet will slowly go out and eventually cause a disconnect to where you have to reconnect everything yada yada.

This sounds like your home internet is either being throttled and or something is blocking the permissions for your internet to stay accessed from that computer.

All in all this really sounds like your internet is throttle either due to bad speed, bad connection (aka the lines outside arent good if you're on cable or your ping is way to high if you're using sat.) or you're over your allotted data for the month or your router isn't up to date and doesn't support the latest ipv4 etc etc

Out of the above mentioned it literally literally sounds like throttleing and or loss of ping and or ISP hates you.

Others have said similar things, but what I don't understand is how it only happens with Valheim. I've played a bunch of other games online on this PC, both on Steam and otherwise, and haven't had anything like this happen. I can go play Vermintide, Darktide, Civ, Conan Exiles, No Man's Sky, Dinkum, M&B, etc. all online and have no issues, but as soon as I try Valheim my computer keeps dropping connection. Does it make sense for my ISP or router to only hate one specific game?

WHen you go online and you start doing whatever it is you're doing internet works great.

WHen you start watching videos your internet then slows down and comes to a halt and then disconnects. (this an example).

Both of the above two sentences are perfect examples of your ISP throttling your internet.

(if your ISP is not throttling, then you're over your monthly data and internet is going slow but read below)

Internet service providers Throttle different types of data.

Pictures and things like that they allow the download of fast such as text based so it appears snappier etc etc but if you are doing things like media and gaming especially over a server, that transmits quite a bit of data and either your ISP is throttling the access to the internet over those types of data or it just goes back to the exact statement i stated earlier. "Out of the above mentioned it literally literally sounds like throttling and or loss of ping and or ISP hates you."

Edited: it could be router settings maybe the router is outdated but i doubt it. I've worked for a vast majority of internet service providers and know how they work and what they do.

Edited Again: i want to add the term "Router Settings" is actually a huge thing... its a whole window of other things such as port forwarding open ports etc etc etc. NAT Type and all that stuff.
