If you are sure that the windows update might had something to do with the on going crashes, you should really look into reliability history and errors that get displayed there. You should also check available optional windows update, and consider repairing your windows via windows updates. These[learn.microsoft.com] are known issues on 24h2, so consider reporting your issue there as well. From what I can see, they had reports for several games already.
What do you mean by the guide making your PC run worse? The fact that the guide advises resetting your BIOS to default? If you weren't crashing before, and you haven't messed with your BIOS settings, you probably don't need to reset your BIOS to default, although I stand by what I mentioned i guide, that being the most common cause of crashes. Players simply mess with their clocks without knowing anything about it.
Resetting BIOS is very useful step to flush out any potential issues with the CPU and memory. It simple, if crashes stop, you have a confirmation that the crash was related to that, and after you can go about adjusting their CPU and Memory again incrementally as long as PC stays stable.
