Valheim

Valheim

Losing items because game crashes
So I recently started playing Valheim again and my game has randomly crashed a few times . Either I never had crashes before or I never noticed that I lost things when I started after the crash . My most recent crash I was sailing along and had 2 Dvergr extractors on board . SO needless to say I'm annoyed at losing them . Has this been an issue for any one else with the game crashing and losing items ?

Worlds and characters are separate saves, so things in your boat's inventory won't be protected by your character save (boats and everything related to them are maintained in the world save). The game typically performs automatic world saves every 30 minutes and when leaving the game/when the server goes to sleep or gets shut down (you can also force saves manually using the "save" command in the console [F5, if enabled] or "/save" in chat [Enter]). A crash means everything after the latest save never happened, including changes in inventory.

If you're getting regularly occurring crashes, then I suggest doing manual saves after any major activity (like loading up your boat inventory - but don't spam it as the game will just ignore the request if it's been too soon since the last save) until the cause of your crashes can be fixed. Also, I suggest making sure your saves are set for local storage rather than cloud storage (you can configure that from the character select screen or world select screen - for single-player or client-hosted worlds, at least). Things have improved a bit in the past 4 years, but this game still has occasional (rare, but not non-existent) issues with cloud saves.

EDIT: It's come to my attention that the manual "save" is an admin command which means, for one thing, that it's not available through chat, but you also don't need devcommand access in the console. It also requires being an admin (automatic in single-player IIRC, requires having your Steam/Xbox ID in the admin.txt file in multiplayer).

Yep. been having the issue for months where it saves the character save but crashes on world saves. I have not seen a single response form the developers on the issue at all.

It's expected for the game to not save properly if you end up crashing during saving. This can also lead to save corruption. What you should be doing is solving your crashes in general. What are you system specs?

I have a 12th gen intel I9 12900k which I'm starting to think is the problem as I'm playing Valheim on an older system and it's working just fine .

Random crashes in Valheim usually occur due to unstable CPU/RAM clocks. Do you remember tweaking those? If not, they could have been tweaked the person who built your PC. I usually recommend to reset BIOS setting to default + no further tweaking to see if your crashes will stop occurring (my crash guide).

I would do that as the only tweak for now. Then if it continues, set FPS limits to 60 outside of Valheim via graphic card control panel and confirm those work. Crashes during saving can occur on unstable system when CPU/GPU quickly transition from low to high FPS, which can happen during saving due to main game thread pausing to collect data for saving (that stutter when saving occurs).
