Valheim

Valheim

Crashing on LOADING Screen
Valheim will load up, get to where I pick which character, then I choose a server, and - I see LOADING in the bottom right corner, then the game crashes. I even got a MEMORY MANAGEMENT BSOD one time.

For troubleshooting, no other Steam game is giving me issues, just Valheim.
I verified files
I uninstalled and reinstalled
This happens with both Vulkan and DX

My system:
Intel 9th Gen i7
16GB RAM
Nvidia RTX 2060

So I'm well above specs, but the game crashes my PC every single time, always on that loading screen.

Make sure that your GPU drivers are up-to-date. Have you ever used mods? If so, try to not only uninstall the game but manually deleting the Valheim folder. Mods are persistent and will not be deleted by the usual uninstall procedure.

What happens when you not choose a server but a local world you created? Are you using completely new characters or have you used these in a local world (with mods)?

Are you using antivirus software or other "helpers"?

You can try what electricdawn said about uninstall and manually delete valheim folder.
You can also go here and see if any other solution might help. https://steamcommunity.com/app/892970/discussions/1/3154202776531668586/

I should have included that, yes all drivers and windows up to date.
Not using any mods, just the vanilla version.
I was trying on local servers, not my dedicated.
It's a pretty clean system, no AV other than the Windows 10 Security.

Plenty of restarts, reboots, power down, etc.. and this problem is post the 4/11 patch.

Thanks,

Thanks, deleted all files and it still is crashing on load.

Also tried creating a new character and a new world and nope, crash on load.

I'm not sure I have understood you correctly. You said something of a "local server". Is that a world you created or are you really running a server? If so, the server may have not been updated yet.

What is the version number of your Valheim installation? What is happening when you connect to a dedicated server. You indicated having one.

Local just meaning I'm not connecting to a server, just running the game on my PC.

I have the same issues connecting to the dedicated server, which is a service I'm paying for, and I did update that one as well, so both are on the current version - the 4/11/22 patch.

It's given me a BSOD for Memory Management twice now. No other program is doing this, and I did a full hardware test, everything came out fine, so it really feels like it's something with the game.

In case you haven't already, can you run the Driver Verifier app to see if there are conflicting drivers. You can alternatively use another app that does this.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-update/driver-verifier-tracking-down-a-mis-behaving/f5cb4faf-556b-4b6d-95b3-c48669e4c983

Perhaps even try re-seating your RAM sticks.

In case you might not know this, BSOD is always hardware related whether that be a driver issue or directly the hardware itself. If you're getting BSOD because of Valheim, it's most likely Valheim is triggering an already existing issue in your PC. Just because no other game you've played have triggered a BSOD, doesn't mean you don't have an existing problem. It just means those other games aren't running scripts that is triggering the problem.

This is actually a good thing, because it's a direct way of showing you that you have a PC problem. Which means you can fix it now, before it gets worst. Of course, one could argue that if you never run Valheim, then the problem will most likely never come back up. True, but that doesn't brush aside that a problem still exist. It's just a matter of time.

It's like cancer. Just because you ignore it, or you don't feel any bad symptoms, doesn't mean it went away. I mean, well, it's possible, since illnesses are sometimes 'cured' by the 'miracles' of the universe... :souleater_pw:

Very good! I didn't even know about this. And I call myself a computer tech with 40 years of experience... *blush*

I ran the driver verifier and while it ran sluggish, with some popping and crackling audio, I didn't get a BSOD or crash. But I only ran it for maybe half an hour.

I also ran the memory diagnostic and that came back clean as well. It's an Alienware, so I ran all the hardware utilities and they came back clean, RAM, GPU, CPU, SSD.

I have the extended service, but they are very particular before sending someone out. However, I know I have a swollen battery that I'm getting replaced, so maybe that battery shifted something. At least I'll have a tech here in a few days, and maybe they'll see something that's causing a problem.

If a BSOD is either driver or hardware related, then at least it pinpoints it to my system, and not the game. I think only one other person said they had a similar issue, so I think your assessment, that Valheim isn't the problem, but that it's accessing and triggering the problem, seems like it's probably and unfortunately right.

I could always do a fresh windows install - I never keep much on my system, and it's a solid state drive, so that process is never really too tedious.

Thanks for the feedback!

:bloodyrose:

As an extended note, quite a few players reinstalled their Windows and that fixed their BSOD and Valheim crashing problem.

I wish I know exactly what the in-game script is that triggers the BSOD though. If this can be pinpointed, at least then the devs that use the Unity Engine can try to mitigate this in the future.

Good to know, that will probably be my go to this weekend. I'll post an update here if it fixes the issue. A clean install of Windows --> Driver Updates --> Steam --> Valheim.

Thank god for SSDs right?

Okay so i was having the same issues and I think i have a fixish, could not figure it out for the life of me but i got up to make diner while it was at the not responding durirng the loading screen and it actually booted in! iv timed it and the game takes about 6min at not repsonding but DOES eventually respond and boot into the worldhave you tried just letting it sit there frozen?
Pheex Apr 28, 2022 @ 8:29am
I have the same problem. Ryzen 3700x 32 GB ram and a 3060 TI on Win 10

All drivers up to date, windows up to date etc etc

It just hangs with blue spinning windows circle and stops responding the moment I try to load into the game.

edit: this happens on both normal mode and vulcan mode.

Is this your initial install and your first try of the game, or did it work before? If you already were playing it, did you install any mods?
