In game development.. optimizing the code mostly happens at the end once it's feature complete. Otherwise they would get spaghetti code some games are known for.
Also knowing some specs of your computer also could at least help us figuring out if it's game related or computer related.
I mean... there are a lot of people with toasters expecting games to launch.
If your system is an i7-7700K with a GTX 1070 running at 4k resolution, I would expect 7500 instances to have a significant impact on your performance, but if you have a Ryzen 9 5950X with an RTX 3090, running at 1080 resolution, I wouldn't expect much of a change.
So, my question is an attempt to obtain more context for whether what you're experiencing is common or uncommon.
I just hope for more content and features that mods already offer (like CLLC, Epic Loot, BuildIt, MassFarming, PlanBuild, Forgotten Biomes, More Skills, Equipment and Quick Slots, Quick Store and so on).
I7 6400 @3,4
GTX1070
16 Gb RAM
Up until now I had no problem with current games in form of lags or performance issues and I could play all of them on the highest setting.
But I start with 6k to 6,5k instances already on a fresh map. But when what Ryzilynt said is true the stacking option of CLLC and the chest mod for more room in them could be the actual problem 4x8 for normal chests and 10k stack size.
And I love to farm, gather, smelt, generate charcoal and set up/print up building for these purposes.
So in the end it could be a combination of the flaws of the source code and the modded stuff.
What resolution do you use?
All setting to highest possible without vsync. I am using G-Sync and no motion blurr.
On the new map I have 35 to 40 fps outside, around 30fps in base and on the old map I have 5 fps in base and 60 outside of it.
So, there might be more going on than merely the number of instances. Do you have screenshots of your old base that you can share so that we can see if anything obvious strikes us?
I mean if you look at it can handle alot of information going on.
Big waves, Thunderstorms, Mist, Swaying trees, Wet light conditions and a whole lot of trees in the same area.
But if oneself start to add things more and more the FPS is going down in a very steep curve
even if the size of it does not even compare when running around in a leafy meadow forest.
Hm... never had a FPS problem... the biggest difference would be that I use 64 GB - RAM instead of your 16. And I have a GTX 2080 Super.
Prozessor Ryzen 7 3800X...
No mods

I have about the same configuration RTX 2080 ti, I9900K, 64 GB Ram, 2560X1440
But when hitting 11-12000 instances it drops down alot around 20-35 FPS
Maybe I haven't progressed far enough yet... to have problems. Your profile is private, so I can't see screenshots.
