SERVER: World gone after update - Fix action!
Ok, folks. Calm down. Your world is not lost.

Iron Gate just moved the save files to another folder with a different name. This works fine on local servers, but seems to cause havoc with server hosters, as these assume fixed names for this folder.

Your save games are still in the "worlds" folder, but the updated Valheim server now use the "worlds_local" folder.

All you need to do is to move the "YOURWORLD.db" and "YOURWOLD.fwl" file from your "worlds" folder into your "worlds_local" folder, overwritting what is already there. It is HIGHLY recommended to make a backup of both folders first!

This should bring back your world and its progress.

Again, it is HIGHLY recommended to make backups periodically of your save game files regardless of circumstances, just to be on the safe side.

Hey,

Thanks for the info. I stressed out too soon ^^ I wonder if you could help me, i have a server on my local NAS, which is running with OMV. I can't access files through SMB on W10, my server is throttled by docker portainer. Any help on this ?

Sincerely,

Where do you find this folder?
electricdawn Jun 20, 2022 @ 2:01pm
Are you running this locally on your PC, or on a rented server? If on a rented server, you need to read the instructions from the hoster. I can't really help you there, as I don't run a hosted server right now.

If you run it locally, your game save in Windows is located here:
C:\Users\YOURUSER\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim

YOURUSER is the name you gave your account when you first created it. The "AppData" folder is initially hidden and needs to be made visible. Please let me know if you need help with that.

Yeah I rent a server. I still cannot get things to load properly. I updated BepInEx, but since I am not hosting, does that mean I cannot update the location of the files? I do not see a "worlds_local" folder, only a "worlds" folder in the location you specified. This is not my wheelhouse, which is why I rent a server lol. I was able to get it to load after updating, but I am unable to do anything and I just spin in circles with no control. y inventory is full of blank icons and the menu is gibberish

Ok, you're running mods, those need to be updated first. Not sure on how to do that on a server, since I never have hosted a Valheim server with mods.

On your client, I recommend running ThunderStore to manage your mods. It makes it MUCH easier then doing it all manually.

Hi there, i'm running the server on a debian based system. The issue for me is that the valheim folder i created with docker and portainer, located in one of my drives, is not accessible with SMB. If anyone knows how to control Access to folders within the stack or if i only need to create a variable to the New folder but still i gotta move my previous save to the New folder.

Unfortunately I cannot help you there, I'm afraid, as I'm currently not running a Debian system, and I have no experience with Docker whatsoever.

I hope there a players here with more knowledge than me on Docker or Linux in general that are willing to help you out. Good Luck!

Apparently, there was a recent docker update that might have its own problems. Can't help with that myself, but maybe it's worth checking out.
Thanks, the update might have done it. I also needed to remove the new directory for saves and copying my map into the old one and let the server reinstall it. Now my map is not erased at launch.

Could you elaborate on what the new and old directory for saves is? Do you mean the worlds and worlds_local folder? Does this mean you need to not only delete the content of the folder but also the folder itself?
I'm running a dedicated headless server on an Ubuntu 18 box, and the backup versions of my world's .db and .fwl file are not loading correctly even when placed in the new (AND old) folder locations.
The world runs, players can load into it, but it's a barren landscape with no trees or plants or anything. Just hills and water and mobs (like greylings and deer). This is a backup from late May, of a world we've been playing since January.

Just a guess, but I think you may be running mods, that need to be updated first. You might also want to verify your game files on your PC as well as on the server.

Edit: Just verified, I moved a local world from "world_local" to a dedicated server in the "world_local" folder (running on the same PC) and it worked flawlessly.
Edit2: This is pure vanilla, of course.

Not sure if you were responding to OP or me, but I am running 100% stock and having this problem.

I was responding to you as I AM the OP. ;)

That said, run a Steam file verify over BOTH your PC and the server. Please forgive me for asking this, but this has been happening:

Have you ever used mods with Valheim? It is important that you answer this correctly, as there could be residue files left over from the mods, even if you think you got rid of them.

Another thing that may sound ridiculous to you, but trust me, people sometimes don't do it:
Have you restarted Steam, your computer or your server?
I have never used mods in any way whatsoever. I can 100% guarantee you mods are not involved, much less the cause.

I've restarted both client machines, the server, the server process, and the Steam client (including the steamcmd headless client on the server).
