crashes on intel CPU´s because of P-Cores
i noticed, the game crashes a lot since the ashlands update on my i9 13900KS, but i got around a fix that deactivates P-Cores on the Intel CPU and that seems to fix the crashing issue for me... anyone else having similar issues? It was not a big deal before Ashlands update... so im curious about the reason for this.

I found some other players on reddit having same issues, and it seems CPU related for some of them... so they have the problems also on other applications, but for me its only in valheim, and it started with ashlands.

Greetings

I have frequent game and PC freeze since Ashland update. Have to hard reset. Not sure if it's a coincidence.

Older Intel cpu here

Maybe you two should specify if you're actually IN the Ashlands when that happens or if it is happening outside as well.

Edit: I haven't had a single crash in Valheim for quite a long time now, even after the Ashlands update, but then I'm not even close to enter Ashlands.

And I'm not using an x86 compatible CPU. :P

Freeze here, not crashes. at loading screen or in first few mins into game, frequent.

to specify the time this happens, its mostly, when i go into a portal and want to teleport around...

also, im playing on jotunheim server, so i have access to ashlands stone portals, wich cause the same problem... sometimes it happened, when i had a lot of assets loaded, like in crowded areas, or when i haul in my fields when farming.

in a few cases it happened right after i took something out of a chest, wich lead to loosing the items that i had picked up.

edit.: also... i pretty much think it has only to do with the P-cores of intel CPU as these cores are intended to run faster, and therefore probably are not stable for ashlands.

for now i have fixed this issue by deactivating them, still im curious if there might be some other solution to this.

Some questions:
1. Maybe your PC is overheating? Do you overclock?
2, Are you running any mods that may cause the crash?

Motherboard manufacturers had to comply by the end of May 30th 2024. For some CPUs it might be too late as they might generally become more unstable.

If you have an Asus motherboard, you can resolve crashing issues by updating the BIOS and selecting Intel base profile in BIOS. if you have a Gigabyte board, then you are out of luck, as the Intel defaults they set are not stable enough.

You can see the list of specs for players that are still crashing in Valheim, even after BIOS tweaks:

RTX 4080, i9-13900K, Gigabyte B760M Aorus Elite AX
RTX 3070, i9-14900KF, Gigabyte B760m Aorus Elite AX
RTX 4070, i9-14900KF Gigabyte Z790 GAMING X AX
RTX470ti super, i9-14900K, z790 Aorus Pro X
RTX 4080, i9 13900KS, Gigabyte Z790 AERO G

What all of them have in common, is Gigabyte motherboards.

Here's the last Intel statement[www.tomshardware.com]. If you have a Gigabyte board, I would recommned you to oppen official ticket on Intel forums and support channels, as well as on gigabyte support channels (their forum doesn't work). If you want to be a part of the Discord group where guys are trying to fix their crash issues on Gigabyte boards, hit me up on Valheim Discord (Valheim server, steam bugs channel).

thanks for the answer, i do have an asus board, so i will make the update and see for it to work or not. but ye, maybe the cpu got worse over time because it had wrong voltage?... i will see

Update, i just used the newest BIOS updat for ASUS Motherboards, i do habe a ROG Strix Z790 E WIfi with an Interl I9 13900KS and with the newest update and the recommended Settings, i just played about 2 hours wich is kinda long without a crash... but it did crash now... so the problem is still going on with the P-cores for me... i will again deactivate them completely and just use E-cores for Valheim

For Asus boards, you just need the latest BIOS + BIOS reset to default + activate Intel base line profile. If that doesn't make your CPU stable, and you still have a warranty, RMA your CPU as soon as possible.

Downloaded Process Lasso, how do I disable P-Cores game specific? RTX 4080 i9-13900KF with Gigabyte z690 having stability problems. Ran Valheim with never any crashes prior to Ashlands update

For gigabyte motherboards most players that reported disabling P-cores helping with stability, was not a permanent workaround, as crashes were still happening. From easier fixed, disabling Turbo boost helped the most, but came came with too much of a performance drop to be recommended to anyone. The only permanent solution on gigabyte board that I've seen, from the cases I listed in previous comment, was related to replacing the CPU for new one. It might be that certain CPU started dying due to running on too high clocks for a 1-1.5 years. I would also suggest you to attempt to RMA your CPU as fast as possible.
