Valheim
Cloud/Local Character/World Data Out of Whack?!
First, thanks to everyone who chimed in on my recent thread about preserving our dormant world! Really appreciative of the time and effort y'all took to answer my questions.

I think I just experienced some of the "disconnect" that people have been dealing with on cloud vs. local saves so once again I come to the community for help:

I have a character "The Scientist" that was created in 2021 in our old server-based world and also an old test world that I created (also in 2021) shortly after we stopped playing the family world. Yesterday I created two new test worlds and briefly played in them with both old Scientist character and a new one named "Heimdall". All seemed to work OK.

Then this morning, I was adjusting the game properties and based on what I'd read earlier here I switched off the Valheim cloud save option (I forget the exact command name). Then when I fired up the game I didn't see ANY of my characters (blank list)! So I bailed out, re-enabled the cloud save setting, then re-entered the game and my characters were back again!

I looked at the two folder locations (the remote and local) that were mentioned earlier and promptly got confused. In the local characters subfolder, I see "the scientist.fch.old" and "the scientist_backup_20231206-123144.fch" but no data for Heimdall. In the remote characters folder, though, I see .fch and .fch.old files for both Scientist and Heimdall as well as the file heimdall_backup_auto-20231214160808.fch

Similarly in the local worlds subfolder there's files for that old 2021 test world ...a .fwl.old from that date and two backup files (.db and .fwl) dated just yesterday. And nothing about the two new test worlds. In the remote worlds subfolder, though, there's a backup .fwl file for each of the two new test worlds! (I see no world data that looks like it was from our family server world, which I guess makes sense since it must be out on the server laptop??)

Someone in the previous thread used the term "abstruse" regarding Valheim's file naming and storing conventions, and at this point I have to say that he/she wasn't wrong! I also think that since cloud save was introduced previously--but after creating Scientist and before creating Heimdall--it apparently affected the newly created world and characters.

Anyone care to take my hand and help me navigate through this mishigas?!

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Valheim now defaults to saving things in the cloud if it's available. Before switching off Steam Cloud for this game, you'll need to set the worlds and characters to local storage:

  • Launch Valheim and select "Start Game"
  • At the character select screen, click on the "Manage Saves" button
  • In the new in-game window that comes up, select each character save (or at least each one that has a picture of a cloud next to it) and click on the "Move to Local" button.
  • Continue on to the world select window and repeat the above for your worlds ("Manage Saves" button, then moving everything to Local)
  • Exit Valheim

All of your data will now be saved locally and you can comfortably turn Steam Cloud off. When looking for specific files with a file manager, the base folder is:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim

The four important folders in there are worlds and characters, which hold any worlds and characters that haven't yet been updated to the post-H&H format (simply loading them in game will update them if needed), and worlds_local and characters_local, which hold the local copies of save data under the newer system.

Avatar.zero, nicely explained and worked like a charm. Many thanks!

And thanks as well (and apologies) to the sysop/moderator for relocating this thread to the proper sub-board.

No more stupid questions from me for the nonce; I've fulfilled my quota for the week!

Thanks,
Mike

sysop

Now that's a title I haven't heard in a long time.

A long time...

Seriously, though, I'm glad I could be of help there!

Oops, just dated myself there, didn't I?!

Thanks again,
