After the 0.217.28 and .29 game patches, I found it necessary to remove any version of the denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim-5.4.22nn mod. Before that I had been using the 5.4.2200 version of that, and then when these game patches released in quick order I discovered that it had been updated twice in the meantime, to 5.4.2202.

Well, trying to use EITHER of them with 0.217.29 had ugly consequences. One of them actually caused BepInEx to abort and the vanilla game started instead. The other caused an exception caught by the Unity Crash Handler.

Out of desperation I tried removing it entirely, leaving just BepInEx 5.4.22 from GitHub with my other 83 mods... and whaddaya know it worked. Not the vanilla game, either, fully modded with all 83, back to normal like nothing had happened.

does Vortex not handle BepinEx or valheim mods well? I was switching to Vortex to keep my mods up to date automatically... then the game got hit with the two small updates and I have not been able to play since without deleting my BepinEx folder. I did try to drop in jsut the git hub main version not the denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim as VulcanTourist did but it still doesnot launch at all.

I made sure, using the new Update BepInEx button that was the result of my prodding the NexusMods team*, that BepInEx 5.4.22 was installed (which I already had anyway). The only other thing I did was remove the "Pack". That was all I had to do.

* For perhaps a year before this (and before I was even playing the game), Vortex had been intermittently useless to mod this game because of poor design of the Valheim extension for Vortex, which distrusted users, and in the process placed an even heavier burden on the extension to always be up-to-date. Well... it wasn't! The lead designer Nagev became ill and nobody thought to step in and keep it maintained. If a new version of BepInEx came out, the extension clung to its obsolete internal copy of it and FORCED it on users, meaning the game could never be launched modded. I caught the tail end of one of those episodes. as a new player.

I lit a fire under Pickysaurus about how this extension gave Vortex a very bad name, and within days the extension was modified to give users back some control... so you're welcome. I can link to the discussions if anyone cares.

I just used the Update Valheim BepInEx Payload to get v5.4.22 from Vortex
it did not launch with that installed.

"The only other thing I did was remove the "Pack" "

what / where is the "Pack"? are you referring to the extra BepInEx stuff added just for Valheim? if that is the case I do not know the specific files/folders to get rid of.

I'm referring to one of these "mods" that actually include a modified version of BepInEx:

denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim-5.4.2200.zip
denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim-5.4.2202.zip

You should have one of the two, probably the former, preinstalled by Vortex in your Mods list. denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim-5.4.2105.zip was preinstalled for me when I first started playing about 8 weeks ago and decided to use Vortex to mod it. It was the Valheim extension that was responsible, I assume.

BepInEx.dll is actually identical to the GitHub release of the same version, but other files like the Preloader DLL are different. Presumably those differences are the problem that ruins the game when its modified BepInEx is present. It worked just fine with the .2105 version, and the .2200 version worked at first when BepInEx 5.4.22 was first released, but now with the game's 0.217.28 and .29 updates it no longer seems to work. Just the kosher BepInEx 5.4.22 from GitHub does, at least for me and some others.

thats actually what I was thinking is I have a DLL somewhere that is lingering or did not get overwritten properly.
I am going to start fresh and see what happens as I was sure I got rid of the denikson packs already. thank you. in theory I should be able to verify install then run vortex and only hit the BepinEx button and make sure there is no denikson packs in my install folder, the game should launch and then I will start adding my mods after that.

also a thought is im using the Profile manager in Vortex for the First time. I have one Profile for mods and one with out any mods but i just realized even the one without any active mods is still using the BpinEX to launch, thats why its not working either.

BTW, the profiles come in handy if you ever need to do mod troubleshooting: you can duplicate a profile and then disable all mods and add them back one at a time or the reverse, taking one at a time out, all the while leaving your main profile untouched until you're done and know the cause.

That is likely; I didn't lose anything. With one of those two "Pack" versions, can't recall which, the Preloader fails and BepInEx just aborts BUT it still hands off to the vanilla game, so the vanilla game starts without you necessarily noticing that it's not modded! I noticed right at the main menu that it was vanilla because I use Valheim Plus, which replaces the vanilla banner with one that says Valheim Plus... so I knew when that wasn't there. I just quit right there, but you might have tried to start a game and caused disaster.

I finally solved the problem with the latest denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim-5.4.2202.zip The game would not launch and I would get the error message Bepinex could not run preloader. There may be other ways of fixing it, but this is what I had to do and I haven't had a problem since. First, I had to uninstall Vortex mod manager. Then, I uninstalled Valheim. Next, I went to File Explorer and selected "This PC." In the search bar, I typed "Vortex". When the search was complete, I selected everything and deleted it. Then I typed in Valheim and did the same thing. I then dumped my recycle bin and restarted my computer. I reinstalled Valheim, then downloaded Vortex mod manager. Vortex now has a feature that will automatically download the latest version of Bepinex. If you attempt to launch the game, you will get the same error message but if you go to the Valheim folder D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Valheim (or where ever yours is), add a new folder and name it unstripped_corlib
Close everything and launch the game from Vortex, but it shouldn't matter if it's from Steam or the desktop icon. You should be able to get into the game with no issues. Close the game and add the rest of your mods and you should be good to go.

Seems like the Jotunn was responsible for start menu Some Error message some people have seen. The new version is available on Nexus now. Make sure you uninstall the old one and download the newest. Tested and all works fine for me now.

Sorry for the delay. I finally gave up on Vortex and started using R2modman from Thunderstore and I couldn't be happier. It's so much easier, faster, and you can do way more with it. You can do way more stuff with it, like share all your mods and config files with friends.
