Well, trying to use EITHER of them with 0.217.29 had ugly consequences. One of them actually caused BepInEx to abort and the vanilla game started instead. The other caused an exception caught by the Unity Crash Handler.
Out of desperation I tried removing it entirely, leaving just BepInEx 5.4.22 from GitHub with my other 83 mods... and whaddaya know it worked. Not the vanilla game, either, fully modded with all 83, back to normal like nothing had happened.
* For perhaps a year before this (and before I was even playing the game), Vortex had been intermittently useless to mod this game because of poor design of the Valheim extension for Vortex, which distrusted users, and in the process placed an even heavier burden on the extension to always be up-to-date. Well... it wasn't! The lead designer Nagev became ill and nobody thought to step in and keep it maintained. If a new version of BepInEx came out, the extension clung to its obsolete internal copy of it and FORCED it on users, meaning the game could never be launched modded. I caught the tail end of one of those episodes. as a new player.
I lit a fire under Pickysaurus about how this extension gave Vortex a very bad name, and within days the extension was modified to give users back some control... so you're welcome. I can link to the discussions if anyone cares.
it did not launch with that installed.
"The only other thing I did was remove the "Pack" "
what / where is the "Pack"? are you referring to the extra BepInEx stuff added just for Valheim? if that is the case I do not know the specific files/folders to get rid of.
denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim-5.4.2200.zip
denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim-5.4.2202.zip
You should have one of the two, probably the former, preinstalled by Vortex in your Mods list. denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim-5.4.2105.zip was preinstalled for me when I first started playing about 8 weeks ago and decided to use Vortex to mod it. It was the Valheim extension that was responsible, I assume.
BepInEx.dll is actually identical to the GitHub release of the same version, but other files like the Preloader DLL are different. Presumably those differences are the problem that ruins the game when its modified BepInEx is present. It worked just fine with the .2105 version, and the .2200 version worked at first when BepInEx 5.4.22 was first released, but now with the game's 0.217.28 and .29 updates it no longer seems to work. Just the kosher BepInEx 5.4.22 from GitHub does, at least for me and some others.
I am going to start fresh and see what happens as I was sure I got rid of the denikson packs already. thank you. in theory I should be able to verify install then run vortex and only hit the BepinEx button and make sure there is no denikson packs in my install folder, the game should launch and then I will start adding my mods after that.
also a thought is im using the Profile manager in Vortex for the First time. I have one Profile for mods and one with out any mods but i just realized even the one without any active mods is still using the BpinEX to launch, thats why its not working either.
think i tried to load the map with out the mods active and it wiped everything in the world that was modded???
Close everything and launch the game from Vortex, but it shouldn't matter if it's from Steam or the desktop icon. You should be able to get into the game with no issues. Close the game and add the rest of your mods and you should be good to go.
