Personal vs server mods, peer to peer
So i was on a vanilla server, most of my QOL mods still worked, such as the essential Craft from containers mod, speedy paths, equipment and slots. However, heightmap unlimited did not. Which was fine, i was expecting none of them to work.
I have a stubborn friend who doesnt want to spend 10 minutes downloading bepinex and just these basic ones i cant play the game without (craft and slots).

If we do end up playing together and he doesnt mod, can i still host and have my mods still work?

Thoughts?

mods that add new assets will be invisible for any client not running that mod and trying to give them an item from a mod they aren't running is a good way of deleting that item

mods that change how the world itself generates will most likely be required by all

mods that change how mobs spawn are not 100% necessary for everyone to have functionality wise but uhhh weird stuff will happen there if not everyone has

mods that change textures, your inventory slots, your skills and how they interact with vanilla mechanics or things that can be isolated to your character and experience like small qol bits usually can be run alongside vanilla clients and on vanilla servers

i used to run a profile that was by design something i could take into a vanilla server without a) ruining progression or the game at large for others and
b) ruining my preferred experience of the game

it takes a bit of trial and error to work out what features will and wont work in mods that will/somewhat will work alongside vanilla, for example when i run "beasts of burden" i can get boar and lox to follow me fine and better still if i'm the "area owner" vanilla players can do that too but if i'm not the "area owner" carts will detach and lox and boar will not follow.

so essentially if he's not modding heightmap unlimited will present a problem but the qol stuff should be no issue....except when you leave him in your dust on the speedypaths ;)

one additional thought i had, if a mod requires jotunn it may cause your friend grief trying to join you unmodded depending on what mods you run as jotunn does a handy version check on joining clients and sometimes if a mod needs to be there for it to work for everyone jotunn will prevent the un-modded player joining
