On startup it gives an error, it won't start.

You need to update your mods.
Highly recommend using Thinderstore, makes modding for this game super simple and always tells you when there is an update to a mod.

Pretty much what @wizard_of_woz wrote. ThunderStore is THE recommended way of using mods.
