Character was deleted --why?

I logged into play tonight and my character is gone. 46 hours down the drain!!!! How the heck can I recover my character?

This happened to me. Here's what i did fellers.

First open your game and when you're on the main menu you'll see a tiny white bar on your lower left hand side of the screen. If that's not there. Then do the following.

Open up file explorer, and go to your C: drive. Go Users -> (The user you are) -> appdata -> Local low -> Irongate -> Valheim -> Characters.

Now that you're in the file location you should see a list of all your characters. If your character if in here you'll see the files are ending in either .new .vdf .old or just .fch.

Your real character file will be a few thousand KB in size. You guys most likely don't have the exact character as before but an old copy of that character, hopefully only a few hours old.

For instance, say the character you want back is named Bob Jones. You'll see a file named (Bob Jones.fch.old) All you'll need to do is rename it. Simply remove .old from the end making it look like (Charactername.fch). Launch your game and see if your character is now there.

I'd really recommend making a secondary folder on your desktop just for world / character backups and after every session backing up your data. Make sure to save a few just incase. Hope i helped <3

It's been happening to others so I'd suggest you post about this on the bug forum, maybe add to one of the several existing threads instead of making a new one. Explain what happened, anything odd or crashes. This is something the dev team will want to fix quickly, the more info they can get the better.

Characters should be on your PC.
Mine are here
C:\Users\'yournamehere'\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim

If it isn't loading it may be corrupt. Who knows. In the character file you should find your character and the previous character save with an .old extension on it. Backup both of those and then in your character folder you can remove the .old extension to make that your current character save.

Some people have suggested that that turning off the steam cloud saves for Valheim could help, but I read a few posts where people said they still have had the issue even with it disabled.

I don't know if it's a multiplayer thing, related to other servers, something to do with multiple users on one system, or something else. I play one one server with one character and have one solo game on the go with another character. I'm using the steam cloud but no one else uses Steam on my system. Everything has been fine for me so far. Maybe add details on the bug forum if you've been sharing the computer with someone else who has a different Steam login, or if you use the family share thing, or if you're using a bunch of mods.

No, actually I never had a mod installed for this game. I'm playing the game since a year (270 hours) and never had a single problem. Only thing I can think of is that currently my Windows licence has expired and I haven't had the time to get this fixed yet. I'm pretty sure the game isn't to blame.

I recommend saving backups too, it's early access, best to play safe

It seems like Steam Cloud problem. There are 3 options -> 1. - "off", 2. - "on" (when is difference between files, local will be used) and 3. - "on" (when is difference between files, cloud will be used). If you fiddle with files (world and character), I strongly suggest option 1 - off mode, if you don't to play on more than 1 PC. If you want it, set the option 2 - local files are preferred.
