Secondly, go here: https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage - press CTRL F and look for Valheim. Click Show Files, and download the character saves onto a separate back-up/temp folder. This is on the notion you have Cloud Saving turned on. Copy those character files into the Characters folder in LocalLow and run the game again. Do your characters show up?
Now, this is also on the premise you're not using mods and you are indeed logged into the right Windows account.
I replaced the character files with the ones pulled from the remote storage and there was no change. They are not showing up in the character select list.
1. Back up the LocalLow Valheim folder, and then delete the entire folder. Optionally, reinstall the Valheim game as well.
2. Run Valheim and create a new character with a new name, then play a new world with a new name.
3. Sleep or exit the game properly (not clicking the X).
4. Copy the backed-up world and characters back into the regenerated LocalLow Valheim folder, and see if your characters show up.

[sigh]
The game being in development phase, doesn't mean things aren't supposed to work. It means that when something doesn't work, don't be surprised about it. However, there are usually possible work-arounds to the problems. If you search through the forums, there are tons of possible and working solutions for existing problems. Alpha and Beta just means stages of development. Things break, get reported, and gets queued up for fixing. That's how Early Access works and has always worked. Look at Rim World, Astroneer, and every other game that has been in Early Access.
In short, if you're not here to help, then kindly let those who want to help, help.
I am not keeping you from helping anyone. But as I found out today if you are playing early access you should expect the game not to work and if you did expect it to work then you were being ignorant.
I'm fully aware the game is in Early Access (which is not the same thing as Alpha. Quite different, actually). I bought the game a week after it was available and have over 500 hours playing. That character was my current main and was on day 450 or so, so that's a lot of progress lost, which is unfortunate. Now I know if there is a problem like this again I shouldn't shut down (I always shut down properly save for crashes) and some things to try. Thanks for the help. Keep on, Vikings!
If you don't mind jury rigging the character file, I suggest creating your character again, then use a program like Loki to adjust the character traits.

Char 1, Cha 2, Cha 3, Cha 4, Cha 5, Cha 6 (I don't like to use a character for more than one world)
When I do the same thing but with the controller I get:
Cha 1, Cha 3, Cha 5, Cha 6 (then I start clicking left) Cha 4, Cha 2, Cha 1
This makes zero sense to me, just thought I'd share.
