Game will not save.
Everything was working just fine, over 430 hours into the game with no real issues.

A little bit ago I logged onto my main map to find that I lost over 72 hours of game play including getting rolled back to just before I took Moder down.

Checked two other maps and found they were rolled back to almost to the point when I made them.

I then logged back into my main map and found what I had just did was also reverted. Nothing seems to save at all now. Anyone have any ideas?

we are having all sorts of save issues on our dedicated server. For us it is the players that are getting rolled back.

disable steam cloud if you
-run multiple instance of game on the same PC (like game + dedicated)
-run multiple steam account on the same PC
-change PC often
-have internet stability problems
-your save size exceeds limits of steam cloud

devs configured steam cloud weirdly and when sync problem happens...
it doesn't ask "you want to use saves in the cloud from X hours ago or use current saves on PC?"
devs enforce the rollback to X hours ago, while normal games would ask which one you prefer

characters are on player side so it's not related to the server itself
can the bugged guys save on singleplayer? or nope?

Just open F5 and type save
MokahTGS 2021년 5월 2일 오전 11시 00분
Disabling Steam Cloud has no effect on online player saving. Pressing F5 and typing save in the console only works reliably in SP. SP saving works fine. Network saving does not. Network saving is players joining someone else's world or a dedicated server. The game is not saving players states correctly. I know full well that saving happens on the players computer. What is happening is the game is not doing that consistently if the player is playing online.

if the world is saved... then problem is not on the dedicated server side

if it's character who isn't saved then it's client-side problem, and exceeding steam cloud limit is actually good reason to not save in such case

anywya F5->save works on dedicated server,
it saves the dedicated server world,
you have to be admin to use it tho

What you don't seem to understand is that saving the world on a server is not enough if the players lose all of their progress due to random rollbacks. The server should be saving the players information as well...like EVERY OTHER online game I have ever played.

What is not happening is when the players are on a server they're player files are not being save properly on their clients so when they log off, they're characters are rolled back randomly. this has been reported numerous times. read the forums and bug reports.

F5 & save on a dedicated server is useless if it isn't also saving the players information. They can log off, and their clients aren't getting saved correctly.

"every other online game" saves exactly the same way as valheim :V
look at the forest or terraria

characters are rolled back because you exceeded steam cloud that's one (the simpliest) example
"log off" and exit buttons are the "save" button when you are client, you press them = you saved character

if it fails then you screwed up something
just read what the log says, if it's not related to steam cloud then your log will probably tell you that you corrupted something (like it did in my case... I just fixed corruption and saving worked again)
btw since you screw up saving the game doesn't need to rollback anything, it simply loads the files that are there, you screwed up saving = no new save was generated ever

yes, and 90% of time it's found out to be steam cloud and 10% to be corruption caused by players

it doesn't save character info because characters are saved on different PC than the dedicated server
so it's pretty normal thing

How exactly did we screw anything up just by playing the game? Sorry, just because you can't seem to realize something is broken...which is clearly evident by the numerous posts, not just here, but on Valheim's own bug page...doesn't mean that there isn't something wrong.

Ark, Empyrion, Starbound, and even Minecraft...which is buggy as hell...doesn't save games in this manner. You host a server...your character files are saved...by the server. Never have we ever seen roll backs in those games. I have hundreds of hours in Terraria and know exactly how it works. Never had rollbacks in that game either...they seem to have it figured out...why can't Valheim?

It's not the method of saving that is the problem...it's that the method they think they are using is NOT working correctly.

mess with character files
mess with mods
mess with game code
mess with commands in console

just check the log instead of escaping from reality
that's what I did and it allowed me to fix the no saving problem...

Apparently not doing any of the above isn't making the game crash and roll back characters. we must all be under some sort of mass illusion. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I'll go ride my unicorn now.

i dont use mods or mess with console commands. i play the game purely vanilla and my dedicated server has been getting rollbacks and progress loss. i shouldnt have to turn off steamcloud to fix what shouldnt be broken

By default, the dedicated server apps deals only with local files and doesn't sync them to the cloud, so what ever world corruption issue you've been having, it's most likely related to something else. Running low on RAM, improperly shutting down the server, running the server on the same PC you play on and starting the server and client on the same world file, using mods, custom backup scripts, are most common problems.
