If you hate yourself enough to "train" fishing a bit before you go into it for real, you can just cast the line as far as possible and reel in for small amounts of XP. Can also make a fish training pond found on YouTube if you really hate yourself.
But yeah, kinda sucks regardless.
- whilst exploring, mark spots that have lots of fish. Spots with different types are great.
- make portals to these spots as soon as you can build portals. Mine is called fish1, etc.
Remove the workbench after so it doesn't stop fish respawning.
- yes it sucks in the beginning but setting a day aside to catch fish is better than doing it whilst exploring.
- ensure the area is clear of enemy spawners before you start.
- eat only stam foods the day you go fishing.
- do not cast out far. I never cast more than 6m, 4m in the beginning.
- choose a flat area next to the ocean preferably (or flatten it) so you can walk backwards with the fish if your stamina is running out. Happens faster the bigger the fish.
- Consider it recreation, a break from mining, etc. You don't need to eat fish until the plains.
1. Find close spots to shores where fish congregate.
2. You dont need super high stamina but a decent amount can help.
3. Cast as close as you can to you but deep enough in the water that the fish will swim to your bait. 2m - 3 meters is a good range. They will swim close as they've a pretty large aggro range towards appropriate baits.
4. When you hook it dont "reel" instead, walk back and use your mouse to pull the rod more on the land. Being that you cast so close this usually causes the fish to "beach" themselves. Once beached, get close to prompt E for picking up.
5. If you've done it well, not only did you get the fish but you can walk and mouse the bait back into the water without having to recast using more bait. You'll also use very little stamina doing it in this manner and you dont need any decent fishing skill otherwise either.
It basically defeats the entire purpose of fishing later on since you mostly fish for the bonus items. Looting the fish off the line, boat, or beach instead of fully reeling it in forfeits the bonus loot roll. Bonus items later is soft tissue and flamemetal ore, which can be gained through fishing giving the world sort of an infinity resource.
Walking back with the fish also cheats yourself out of xp for reeling the fish in. Xp is earned for reeling in your line (fish or no fish), bonus xp if there is a fish on it. Following the tip to beach your fish is only going to make raising fishing longer.
The best way is to ALWAYS cast maximum distance, then reel the line in to the distance you can successfully reel a fish in completely before running out of stamina which is usually about 5-12m depending up skill and fish differences.
Peon and adritheonly have good tips here; fishing in Valheim, like most things you do in Valheim, starts out with you being pretty awful at it, but just a little time/effort coupled the advice above will get you to a comfortable place with it.
I wasn't sold on it either when I started (and I usually eat up fishing in games more than other side activities), but after giving myself a chance to get accustomed to it, catching fish reliably became a lot easier.
That said, I will grant you it feels a bit jank and is perhaps the least well-implemented of available activities. I'm hoping the 1.0 update better-integrates it into the game, especially with the changes the Bog Witch patch made.
Raise a small stairs by the shore so to have a better view of fish . Easy as pie with stm food
Spear fishing.
It was a thing after all. In fact it was probably the first form of fishing aside from just trying to grab the slippery critters. So I'd say it very much passes the historical accuracy test. Potential drawback? I'm not sure how easy it would be to integrate into the game. I don't want to go making unreasonable demands of the developers and given that as it is now fish are outright impossible to hit by any means, have a feeling it could be a big ask. But there's my two bits anyway.
I think it's a fair idea. We do harpoon serpents, after all. Though I don't use tower shields at all, the serpent shields are delightfully shiny and make excellent decor items.
Perhaps if there were larger types of sea life added in that demanded the harpoon, that could scratch the spearfishing itch. Maybe we'll get that with an Ocean biome update someday.
If you want to enjoy fishing as a sport it is better.
For the survival aspect of the game, fishing for food is not fun. Some days, the fish do not spawn and you catch a very small number or even none when fishing for a full in game day.
As someone who fishes for food, I consider the Fishing update the worst update.
It would be better if you something was added to the game like a fish trap to provide a food source. It could be done in a way that did not affect those who fish as a sport.
