If there's no icon is my corpse gone?
Hi all,
Seems like the game should have saved on exit, but after I did a dumb thing and accidentally discovered the plains early while searching a new continent, I of course got pwned. Frustrated, I exited. After re-starting I don't see the last few minutes of my path on the map and no corpse icon.

Is there any chance the corpse is still there, or did I fail to save so it's gone? (Don't want to invest a huge amount of time trying to recover it if it's not there.)

Thanks!

Thing to do is put the mobs in passive mode in the game menu and run back to that spot no mobs will attack you unless you hit them , see if your corpse is there..
hope this helps

It's possible the auto-save function may not have triggered if you force-quit the game immediately after your death. If so, neither your tombstone nor your items/gear (depending on death penalty settings) will be there.

While dying, admittedly, is always a bit of a bummer, remember to at least give the game time to record the world state before exiting the software if you need a break.

Before you log out always SAVE. ALways :)

I quit immediatly after death numerous times and it always saved . More likely the steam cloud save didn't have time if shutting down steam too fast

Thank you all. I may have been a bit frustrated and forced quit. Lesson learned. Thanks for the suggestions!

If you look there are back up saves for worlds and characters ... you can roll back a bit. Not done this myself so maybe look it up.

This ^
Yes you should save before ragequit!
Also, don't shut down steam before the cloud saves.

Interesting follow up - I found my corpse! Had abandoned trying to go back for it and finally made it back again - and my corpse did exist in the world. So somehow it did save the corpse, but did NOT save the map, so there was no marker for it. I probably exited right after I died so maybe it just hadn't updated. Weird.

Yeah, your personal inventory and containers save when you quit, but the world doesnt save at the same time so you can have mismatches. most particularly if there's a crash after you've pulled materials from a chest and used them to build something. (The chest is empty, but the thing you built doesnt exist)

Man, lucky break. Glad you got it back when all was said and done.
