if you look for a way to prevent spawning in your camp - place some bonefires or those hanging coal-pans in the area. one of it should protect an area of ~20meters around it. torches seems to work too.

Thanks for the pointer, but I don't have access to iron, so the wiki wasn't terribly helpful.

... what does iron have to do with it? Those links were to explain the mechanics of spawning, greydwarf spawners, and spawn suppression, respectively.
There was a suggestion of putting hanging braziers at my camp to stop grey dwarves from popping up, which require iron I believe. I know I don't have the option to make one yet. That's not my concern. My home base is protected by a deep dry moat, lined with the core wood spikey wooden fences.
It's the re-spawning of trolls that I'm having problems with and eagerly awaiting the update where I can reduce the level of difficulty.
However, on the topic of the wiki, it needs work.
