Is there a better way to look for the yagluth's location?
I've explored multiple plains and still haven't found anything.

You can spot the pillars and fuling villages in plains from very far off, and that is where the vegvisir's pointing to yagluth are.
Yag's altar is surrounded by 5 of those tall stone pillars arranged like a hand coming up out of the ground and usually (but not always) its close enough to the coast that you can see it while you are sailing.

You need the totems from the fuling villages to summon Yag. The vegvisirs aren't found in the fuling villages. They are found on stone henge type structures, usually in wide open spaces, and far from other points of interest.

If nothing else helps check out https://valheim-map.world/

If you enter your seed you can check for the boss locations.

Use the world viewer

Another option might be.... to just go hunting serpents at night or bad weather, in uncharted seas. That way you might find his altar by accident.

The Vegvisir is really rare. There are none in the fuling villages and towers. You have to look for stonehenges in the plains. These can be large stone circles or just two upright with one across the tops.
You know you found an actual stonehenge if the music changes.

I've mentioned this before but here goes:
If you don't want to look up your world map on the world seed and can't find the veg then simply sail fairly far east or west. Yag's fingers are difficult to miss since they are usually close to the coast and stick up fairly high.

Just an idea...

all the vegvisir have a slight red glow.

Could it be easier to spot them from far at night?

Unfortunately, no. The game doesn't render well enough for that. I built a light house with an armor stand with a dvergr circlet on top for the beacon and the light house comes into view fully before the light source starts to render.

I haven't tried it using wards or braziers yet.

Best I've found is plain old campfire on a pillar with 2x2m wooden wall reflectors. Even after fire is out when it first renders in it shows up as a reasonably bright light, then as you get closer the reflectors will render in.

OP: Most playthroughs I end up finding the Yag altar before any Vesgirs.

I ended up having to use the seed-viewer.

Glad I did, I would have spent another few DAYS looking, since I search in sections and the entire quadrant of the map I've been searching doesn't have a single one.

My 2 teenage sons found the vegvisir with Yagluth's location in their very first foray into the Plains just last night. Wouldn't have gone 100 metres in and there it was.

So if it's 'rare' I should tell them how terribly lucky they were

I still haven't found one, I just found the spawner.

They got lucky!
