Do ballistas fire downwards?

I installed 4 ballistas around the perimeter of my fortress (screen below), but it feels like they shoot either directly or at the top, but not at the bottom. Since I often see mobs located under the walls of my fortress (of course, the scarecrow and bolts are in the ballista)

The 45 degree[valheim.fandom.com] arc certainly applies on the x-axis but may also apply on y. I have seen mine fire down but definitely not 90 degree straight down.

Yes, the angle appear to be 45 deg left/right and up/down direction. I have ballistas on the perimeter around my Ashlands property and can confirm.
