Fishing skill progression?
Anyone know some good advice for just skilling up?

I already went all over and got my Fishing Hat and well I noticed a few things:
- Fish do not exactly stay in their biomes very well, they bleed over quite far.
- Different fish species have different stamina drains when you hook them.
- Different fish qualities have different stamina drains when you hook them.

I know some are going to say just fish whatever or grab them off the ground. However Mistland fishing gives soft tissue and sap and catching fish also gives some materials as well sometimes.

Then those that will say, "Well you got the hat by crafting with one of each. Well upgrading the hat takes 1 of each again, and I did not exactly catch some of hem, my boat did....

At 14 skill I struggled REALLY hard against the stamina drain to reel in the Northern Lands and Ashlands fish a measly 3-4 meters. 150 stamina would just go poof.

I do have to say the fish cooking is quite disappointing where it is only raw fish :(

I think fish cooking really needs some love. I really haven't had a motivation to fish at all because even after filling 3 chests with 4-5 different kinds of fish by scooping them off the land or my boat I can still only make cooked fish which is a very low tier food. Its less useful than deer stew iirc and you get that in abundance in the meadows and black forest.

I was really hoping that larger high quality fish needed the iron cooking rack to cook like serpent meat. I was disappointed to find that isn't the case.

I'm not sure if this ever changes, but I think there needs to be a better use for fish at the swamp level or at the very least the mountains. Something on par with sausages or wolf skewers.

I power level out the first several levels of fishing by building a tiny shack right on the edge of the shore with a fire to keep rested and resting buffs up for the xp bonus, then i just cast and reel, cast and reel. You get fishing experience from reeling in regardless of whether or not you have a fish on the line. Seems to be slower than if you do, but at least it's still quick for the first 20ish levels to get you to a point where your stamina doesnt drain as fast.

It is confirmed that stam drain increases as you go up the biomes in fish, and yes, you are correct, quality of the fish also impacts stam drain. It's designed to make you level up fishing in meadows, then move to black forest when you skill up a bit, and so on. You can always use the Eikthyr ability if you really need to catch higher tier fish.

Cooked fish meat is an ingredient for the fish wraps recipe once you get barley flour.

Once you have barley flour you can make fish wraps and once you have Angler fish from the mistlands you can make fish n' bread which is the highest stamina food available in the game.

@ OP fish n' bread, mushroom omelette, salad, and tasty mead and the rested buff with stamina mead as a back up. If you are far enough from shore you'll only have to worry about sea serpents attacking and the -health regen won't be an issue.

It will be easier to catch the higher tier fish when they release the higher tier foods with the biomes that are currently problems.

Think I am missing something for that? I will have to check the wiki.

Yeah there just aint enough uses for all the raw fish you accumulate other than the obliterator. Which if you been to the ashlands then you know the obliterator is kinda useless if you need coal.

@knighttemplar one thing I did learn from that other harbor topic to make fishing easier is jump out of the boat so it stops moving and drifting (once the server says for it to stop.) It will not drift or move again until you touch the rudder. Simply coming to a stop allows you to drift and mobs that swim will start pushing you around.

I wish I could find enough of them to actually worry about it. I go out hunting them and never find them. They only seem to show up when I am transporting ore or headed to colonize somewhere. Especially considering you need their trophy for Heavy Bait.

I always run into sea serpents early in the game when I'm trying to get to a nearby island on a raft.

Exactly, always when you do not want to see them.
Never when you actually want to hunt them, which is needed for bait now.

If you see a serpent circling and it didn't spawn practically on top of you I believe that is a spawner. It might be useful to mark those locations as I think they work like other spawners in that it will generate a serpent in three days once the one there is killed.

Ok well good to know there are some uses for them later on. Seems pretty late in the game though. I think there needs to be something in the early mid-game (swamps and mountains). It just feels weird that unlike deer meat you can't get any edible food from fish until you have the cauldron - which by then cooked fish is basically obsolete. Maybe cooked fish just needs a change. Like make it a neutral food that's better than boar jerky but then lock it behind the spice rack? Or the spice rack allows you to upgrade cooked fist to "seasoned cooked fish" or something. Idk.

It just feels very incomplete at the moment.

Does wearing the fishing hat, which boosts the fishing skill, decrease your xp gain or increase the amount of xp needed to progress to the next level since it is artificially boosting the skill level? I caught a lot of anglers before the queen fight and it seemed to hardly level at all.

I just tested raising the bow skill with and without the root armor and I noticed no noticeable difference getting to level 8. So maybe not.

It adds skill to your existing skill.

The +20 fishing and +20 swimming was worth it.

I'm not aware of any gear that boosts xp gain. You CAN boost xp gain with rested and resting buffs though.

Is this true, does eikthyr work on fishing? I honestly never tried as its clearly only ever worked for running and jumping as advertised

Works for swimming too if I remember right.

Honestly though, I pretty much only use Bonemass after getting it because that can save your life and hours of re-leveling.
