And onions are only found in seed form, and only in chests in the mountains biome.
I visited about 6-8 swamps in my last world. I think maybe 3-4 of those swamp biomes had turnip plants and then it was like 1-3 for the area.
You do not need a high fence, even the half sized walls work, or use the small beams to make a rail fence.
Always keep enough of the vegetable in a container to be able to plant more seed plants. I usually keep a stockpile of 24 of eahc in my farm just to replant because regrowing an entire crop of 30 or so from a few seeds takes too long.
Carrot plants do not respawn. At least I've never seen them come back and the wiki is explicit about it.
Gonna need some proof here. I use a mod that shows a timer for when a resource will respawn and it never shows anything for seed plants.
Since someone is on our server almost all the time, if the respawn timer is less than three or four hours, it'll be easy to check.
(I can ping you the location if you want to check yourself next time you're on.)
