Gjall... what am I supposed to do here???
OK, so I managed to kill the latest gjall who showed up, but I'm at a loss as to how to deal with these things regularly. The one I killed I was able to lure out into the Plains where I could at least see him to plug arrows into him. But if I'm deep in the Mist and come across one, I don't see any option other than to flee? He hides up in the Mist above my wisplight so there's no way I'm going to be able to engage him with arrows at anything approaching a safe range.

Barley mead works well against his fire and the root chestpiece handles the ticks, so at least now I have a plan to not die each time I come across one. But I'd like to do a bit better than that. Ideas?

Does he have a maximum float ceiling so I can get him if I climb a rock spire? Or is he just going to fly higher like the frost drakes do?

Lure him to an area with lighter fog and/or higher elevation where you cans till maneuver. Then run past below him and pelt his bottom with arrows or a spear. You can make him stay mostly put in place like that. Alternatively introduce some Dvergrs to him.

Not sure how the barley wine reacts with the fire vulnerability of the root chest.

resistance overrides weakness

weakspot is the orange eggsack on the underside.

it won't shoot the fireballs at you when you're underneath it which is why the strat is to stay under it to avoid that, but it will bombard you with ticks, (easy bloodbag farming,) until you beat it.

pretty sure it's weak against frost so if archer use frost arrows, if you don't have the frost glands use obsidian for the added piercing damage because it's weak to piercing which is why people also recommend spears.

Yeah, I saw nice damage numbers when I alternated between deathsquito needles and frost arrows, but getting directly under it and shooting straight up is a challenge, I tried that initially and couldn't get the aim right which is why I bailed and ran for the safety (!!!) of the Plains.

I haven't gotten deep enough in yet to find higher elevation / lighter fog... I guess for the time being I'll just run away, and if I see a nice spot like that I'll mark it on the map as my Gjall arena for future efforts.

As someone already said, underbelly (tick egg sacks) is the weak point for pierce weapon damage.
One thing that helps, is that you can block/parry (cannot stagger the Gjall tho) the fire projectiles will lower the damage. So a combo with fire resistance potions, is super helpful there. So if you time it right, you can easily take out a Gjall from distance as well.

Best weapon is the crossbow. Easy to do 200+ crit damage on them with it.

I would recommend you just run away until you have located some nearby Drvegr structures. Mark them when you find them and when you run across a Gjall bring him back the structure and go sit on the box with the extractor in it. Kill two birds with one encounter.

People keep saying this, but I've lured two gjall to a nearby tower and they both died without breaking the needed boxes nor did they take out any Dvergr. Is it RNG perhaps?

How the fight plays out and the layout are big factors. The open air mining camps and the towers with box on the top floor are best. The underground missile silo ones and the harbor towers are the hardest. Seeker soldiers are worth bringing over too, sometimes they can soften up the defenses enough for a Gjall and ticks to finish it off.

Ah yeah ok this was a tower with the boxes on the second floor. Also there are two one-starred Dvergrs which likely makes a pretty big difference I'd bet.

This!

IMO, they're a waste of time to fight, so unless you need to fight them for some reason, just keep moving. If you can lead them to a Dvergr outpost or a fulling village, you can let them handle it. They're fun to sick on lox as well, and a single deathsquito can keep them occupied for quite a while.

My biggest complaint about them is that I build bases at the edge of mistland and plains, and it seems like there's always a horn in the background, which gets annoying fast.

He does float higher but you can surprise jump on him. He has "shake off skill" thou, its dodgeable but hard to time right to stay on.

They die pretty quickly to spears, as you can fire one like a machinegun and they deal crazy damage (just make sure you know the terrain if its misted!), so you can out DPS him. But as icty and faceplant mentions, unless hes guarding something of value, its not worth fighting "daily".

On mistlands launch you did get them pretty much as daily event if it had a spawn near your base.
Also tics are one of few creatures that can easilly kill through corpse run buff.

Hmmm, the ooze bombs look much easier than trying to swat a tick on the back. Root armor made the one tick that got on me nearly harmless but I don't want to push my luck. Is it possible for multiple ticks to climb on?

Crossbow to the belly. If your crazy and with friends, harpoon from a cliff and drag down closer to the ground for others to shoot
