"Best kind of weapon"?
Hi im new, im now in the dark forest, what weapon it's best for use? i mean, Swords? Axes? javaline? for the moment im using Silax axes, Javaline it's fast but low dmg and this feel some mobs like "darksouls" hit 1-2 times and run, first i use Bow, but i don't know whats better for level up the skills

Skill level ups are all about attack speed and low stamina usage, you get the same xp per hit whatever you're fighting. On that basis I'd say daggers especially if you put a boat together and find a leviathan to harvest.

I very much like knife/dagger, especially early game. It works well later game as well, but I think the sword is the best overall weapon. The primary attack is very strong, and the secondary attack is even better, especially if you learn to parry (and you should).

The sword has the advantage that it doesn't get penalized for hitting multiple targets with the same swing. Most other weapons don't have that advantage

The spear works best for me. Quick and painful, and no 3-hit combo to worry about. Once upgraded, most enemies get stunned with the first attack, with follow-ups critting and deleting them. The short range sucks, but the fast strikes mean those annoying greydwarfs that try to taunt you by running in and out of range aren't quick enough, leading to a conveyor belt of death as you poke them to death one by one. The fast strikes mean you can also get in quick pokes and bring your shield up to defend yourself where most other weapons are too slow.

Clubs then maces for knockback and of course skeletons, spears (because they level pretty fast and you don't have to be so close), using both of these weapon types with a shield. My favourite is atgier = they have great attack against most opponents and their special attack (middle mouse) is pretty much like an AOE - great for clearing mobs. First thing I do with bronze is make a mace and atgeir. Before then the stagbreaker can be used against mobs. Don't forget to level bows and you can always whack grey dwarves with a torch

In my opinion, Bow and sword and shield are the best weapons in the game 99% of the time. I'll use other stuff to change it up sometimes and certain weapons are very good for situational uses such as the demolisher for clearing swarming ticks.

Whatever mobs in the current biome are weak to

Black forest? - fire arrows/spears for trolls, axe is a viable option for everything else
Swamps? - blunt (maces) and spirit damage (if you know how to get Frostner early, its the best option)

The list goes on

I like to have an axe, mace, and spear on hand. This covers the 3 physical damage types. Bow is also very good but I've recently been playing without one for the extra challenge of relying on spear throw for ranged.

Ooze bombs are great for frost caves and infested mines, many holes filled with enemies that they make easy.

they all suck as you can't aim it over under ledges

Everybody will have different recommendations depending on playstyle.

If we're looking at pure numbers and what works for most people: swords and blunts are the best choices.
Dr.Doom Nov 17, 2023 @ 10:43am
I am lazy, so usually I stick to the stick ... ah club-like weapons: club/mace/frost for single targets, 2-hand-hammers for splash damage. Bows to start the fight, remove spawners etc.
Later on I switch to Mistwalker (sword), because of... it's cool.

Definitely not haha. The game plays much better if you forget they exist.

If one can grind to high levels yes they are best, but its super booring, and while grinding for it we could be using more interesting weapons for better effect.

Spear can and if its not far you can pick it up automatically.
Knives have very low hitbox that can hit angles where mobs below cant harm you.

Bows and Xbows shoot directly up down ledges regardless of vertical distance, the aiming is just whack (projectile is sent from the weapon tip at an angle you are looking, so the more vertical you look the bigger offset you need to take).

@OP vinyblaster said it best. Sword is closes to "best" and there is one special blunt weapon that goes above and beyond, but otherwise differences are small enough that playstyle preference overrites it, so take your time and try stuff out.

For me, like Suzaku spears are best, they have multihit penalty and no 3rd strike but they level faster than any other weapon, throw is 150% damage for easier stuns and they are cheaper to build so it comes at a right time every biome (when its most difficult).

you will need maces for swamp ,i usually go with axe /mace for black forest/swamp also mace secondary attack allows u to hit low those damn leeches
Zefar Nov 17, 2023 @ 2:35pm
Sword or the Atgeir type weapon for most normal mobs. If you use sword you should bring a shield too for parry.

Switch to mace on certain bosses that are weak to it or against enemies that are weak to it. Golems are weak to blunt so when you fight them first time it's worth having a blunt weapon with you.

Bow to snipe off enemies or to deal with bosses on range.

There honestly isn't that much to pick from imo. Parry is by far the strongest move you got and when you're able to achieve it on enemies easily weapon type doesn't matter much.
Hammer Nov 17, 2023 @ 3:05pm
- Opinions aside and just facts enemies have different weaknesses so there is no single perfect weapon, but maces will deal with a majority of enemies.

- Now my opinion and advice, always carry a backup weapon preferably pierce damage. Since axes already have slash I usually dont bother with swords. That way you always cover blunt, pierce, and slash.

- Parry with shield is your best friend, makes all weapons better

bow (must have for certain enemies which fly later on) and then mace/sword/atgier at the overall best choices in generel. which of these is best depends on enemies fought and situation youre in.

but these 3 along with bow are the most commonly used ones.

axes are more of a tool than a weapon tbh. sword is flat out better than axes moveset wise.

later on (way later) there is more entirely new combat options like crossbows and magic.
