How do you upgrade/build bases?
I made my first base in the first area i started with wooden palisades down at the water and with a moat to help if attacked.

When do you guys make a new base?
Do you make every zone or just have portals from the first one?
Do you use better materials like stone etc later on?

I haven't played in a long time and thought about starting a new solo game and try completing all bosses, but could use some building advice.

Box. I use a random structure found around the meadows as my starting base, but abandon that once I get some core wood for use as better supports to make my main base, which is a large box. Everything goes in the box. Crafting stations and upgrades, storage, bed, kitchen, portals, everything.

If I'm feeling artistic, I might rebuild it all once I get access to iron and stonecutting.

Then the entire perimeter is protected with stakewalls.

I always start with just what I need at that moment, then when I need to expand I find a way to force that into my first starter build. This leads to a very organic looking build vs just a box.

I'm usually making a large house with wooden palisade in a circle outside, at building edge. Then outside of building edge i am digging a moat. Down at water so i can have shipyard.

That works at the start zone, but i was more thinking about how people was building when they enter later zones.

If you build fully upgraded bases later in the game, or just upgrade the first one with portals?

Nice screenshoots .
So you more or less just keep adding at an existing base?
Never moving later in game?

When it feels like i've outgrown the current one.
Usually that means i move by the time i get to plains at the latest since the artisan table adds several new crafting stations that can be a challenge to fit into an existing base without a lot of rebuilding.

Once I start hitting later zones, I just make a shack in those areas and set up a portal to them. Like I'll have a simple farm in the plains and mistlands since you can't grow their crops outside of their respective zones, and enemies will leave it alone if you're not there.

Hmm, i am thinking maybe its possible to make several floors instead?
Or just add another workbench overlapping the first one for more space maybe?

That's probably why they have portal restrictions so people feel like they have to keep moving base. But then they get modded, so you can basically just make a portal group at first base. :steammocking:

That is a good idea. Thanks.
Do you have fences around that farm or not needed?

It's possible, sure, but i actually enjoy building so it's not like i mind.
Even most of my portal outposts turn into over-elaborate builds when inspiration strikes lol.

And by plains you also have a decent selection of materials to work with.

I also build stakewalls around them. Enemy aggression can be avoided by removing line of sight, so even a farm in the plains is completely safe while you're working inside of it if the fulings can't see you. Same with seekers in mistlands.

I usually look for an island in either meadows or black forest region, increase the height of it until I'm certain it's above water level, dig out a cellar and build up a multi storage house from that, with a palisade - later stone - wall at the outer edges, guard towers at corners and a dock at the area away from the ocean.

Since I've played this game before a couple of times, I know what to build and plan ahead. Which works pretty well until the devs release a patch with new content. :steamfacepalm:

May i ask how you manage to make a cellar?
And you said you raised landmass? How? :)

More or less yeah, I mean I have outposts for iron and silver but I like to just build what I need "for now" This way I end up with a build that's lived in. I really dislike just the big open room with random crafting stuff on the walls.

Depends on the portals.
With standard portals, I take the cores and stone etc. and build smelters and benches at the place I am collecting metals (a little FOB - forward operating base). I then make the weapons/armour/etc. stuff out there, and take it through the portals to my base.
I try and make my FOBs at the junction of the tow worlds current and previous, or where they all meet.
So, on the plains I would try and build near the black forest & swamp so I have access to iron and copper/tin. in the Mistlands, it would be just plains and swamp for black metal, as the Mistlands has copper and iron in the form of giant swords and armour.

With modified portals, allowing metals through, one big base.
