Is it possible to base in a dungeon?
I had a brainstorm and thought, hey I can make a campfire in a burial chamber. Why not go the next step and put stuff like a portal in there? Totally safe from mobs spawning after all. But, it wouldn't let me place a crafting station... Sad. Is it the same for all dungeons? I always worry about a portal getting destroyed while I'm elsewhere, had it happen in the past.

True for all dungeons, but you can mitigate the chance of your portal being destroyed by selective placement or some minor building/terraforming.

You can't build in a dungeon. but you can use a cleared out troll cave to breed chickens.

You can build a base under the Elder's altar.

The game program is only active within 96 tiles of a player. If you place a workbench and a portal its raid proof (because every raid except you are being hunted requires 3 base objects) and if you make sure you clear out anything that is close to your portal before you go, it should remain safe while you explore within 96 tiles and its completely safe once you leave range. If there is something attacking it when you portal out it freezes until you get within 96 tiles of the portal again.

Oh well. Would have been cozy living amongst all the skeletons but can't be helped. Thanks for the explanation.

There used to be a mod for that. I have no idea if it still works. I tried the troll cave thing once but the ambient ghost music got on my nerves.

There's always digging under things.

You can build under the Elders spawn point. Just dig under it!

You could probably breed chickens in a burial chamber. I have done it in a troll cave.
Anywhere you can place items that don't require a workbench.
You can use signs as fences and walls, place campfires and cooking stations in most dungeons.

Also can increase comfort level by 1 with the core wood sitting log.

Mobs only attack a very small selection of base items, and only if they get line of sight to them.
Portals are on that list. Basic wood walls are not.

A basic 4x4 wood shack will keep your portal perfectly safe unless a fight happens right next to it and destroys it by accident.

I turned the Queen's Citadel into a chicken farm after killing her so definitely possible.

This let's you build in all dungeons, even the hilder fulling towers and queen arena.

One of my favorite spots is the large frozen lakes at the bottom of ice caves that have the fishing pole and a stone golemn or two. We built a castle there since the cavern is humongous.

Edit: the frozen lakes are rare to find! Maybe like 1 in 7 caves in our experience. More common than an ice cave with fish, but rare nonetheless.

On the subject of lakes, I found a small one in an infested mine. Freaked me out because from above it looked like a bottomless pit with no way to get out of.

Great idea in theory, horrible in practice.
- Chickens wander all through the dungeon. Yeah I dont wanna play Easter egg hunt to find the eggs.
- Animal feeding and breeding only occurs when the player is in the same area. Meaning the moment you leave the cave/dungeon they stop breeding.

My advice is choose a main base your frequent.
- Build a finishing pond
- Build some iron cages
- Plant your gardens in it
- Build your windmill in it and bring the barley there to process

By having all that stuff there the time spent in the base works for all the stuff using "player is in the area" timers.

you can place signs to use as chicken boxes to keep them in one spot. it's the best way to breed them anyway.

I have certainly tried to get a crafting table underground by any means possible, and no luck yet. But I do/will use them as unlimited(nearly) storage for basic materials, and the resources that can be 'stacked/piled' is growing all the time. At one point I had 3-4k of common timber, 1k of corewood, a few stacks of FWood. Three chests to store non-stacking items, and it all stayed in an invulnerable, stasis for in-game years with no issue. I'd come in harvest the Yellow Caps and head out, with no worries, nothing ever vanished or timed out.
