Yeah, I hate using the "ladders" for that reason unless I absolutely have to. Refuse to use them in my actual base.
Adding way more build pieces to all the tech levels is just another of the things I assumed was going to happen eventually when this game launched in early access, as it seemed so obviously too limited. But I've accepted at this point that that probably will never happen, so I just don't think about it anymore.
while this is indeed moronic looking, the 1/2 tile width of them can't be overstated for its ability to squeeze into a small home.
If they do make a ladder, I want it to be iron or better and count as strong reinforcement. The wood ones offer minimal support, just enough to fix a 'keeps exploding' piece in place.
