Make single player enjoyable?
What mods are needed to make the single player experience enjoyable?

I have 32 hours in the game - Tried several times to get in to it, but I always lose steam around the Black Forest, or whatever it's called.

I prepare myself for a tin hunt, but have to turn around before I find much of anything because my bags are full/heavy or it turns to night.
Some times I encounter a troll and by the time I kill it, there's not much left of the day.

How can I make the single player experience more enjoyable?

Thanks!

I use Valheim Plus (by Grantapher) and it solves every single issue I might have with the game. It's like 50 mods all rolled into one, but you get to choose what parts of it you want, and how severely they affect the game.

Inventory, weight limit, durability, stamina costs, buff durations, loot amounts, craft times, and a ton more. Make it harder. Make it easier. Make it your own.

It really depends exactly what part of the game doesn't work for you. Possibly no mods at all, you can change a hell of a lot just with devcommands.

just learn there are much who did it without mods

You don't need mods. You can adjust the world sliders to change the drop rates for items and make the enemies weaker.

You can drop all those piles of extra stone and wood in your backpack that you don't really need.

You can build a small hut with a bed and a fire place and a work bench with a couple comfort items in the meadows on the edge of the black forest so you can sleep and regain your rested bonus without having to go all the way back to you r main base. Store any goodies you want to eventually get back to your main base there and move them when you can build a cart, a karve, or a couple portals.

You can even build a quick lean-to with a bed and a camp fire, sleep, pick it all up and keep going.

sounds like you just dont know what youre doing to give your self a decent start.

things i do every start on a new map are.

1 fined a decent location to build a starting base. I usually just take over a pre existing structure near the spawn point.

i get started on a store house almost immediately because sorting items is a pain without one.

gain access to portals asap. I always have 3. I keep one named portal at my base and one unnamed portal at my base at all times then i travel with the materials for an addition portal so i can transfer my inventory instantly.

youre going to want to kill the first boss asap. that gives you acsess to pick axe

Settings I recommend.

1 turn combat to the lowest difficulty but its not a MUST until you get to the mist lands.
2 turn resources up to 1.5 or 2.
3 make all items transferable through portals.
4 make equipped items on death stay on your body.

for added enjoyment look up the most popular map seeds to give your starting area the most resources or unique scenery.

thats what i do anyway.

I work full time and have a family so i don't want to deal with the full blown grind collecting resources, transporting items or getting wrecked by powerful mobs.

most of my enjoyment comes from exploration, base building, and decorating,

also throw on a pod cast/ video on a second screen. I do this for every game i play regardless.

ive explored mods for this game but i haven't found anything that would add any content worth the hassle of modding. games perfectly fine on its own but in my opinion there's so much stuff i would have rather been implemented in the game instead of ashlands.

hope i helped.

There is a mod for just about everything, but be careful when choosing them because the recent update has broken some of them.

Don't forget to look at the world modifiers on the screen where you choose which world you are playing before you jump in. You can change the difficulty somewhat and increase resource drops in a completely legit way.

Dev commands can easily give you a head start or just flat out hand the game to you. Use with caution. Put "-console" in Steam's game start up settings, use F5 in game, type "devcommands" and go from there. Check the wiki to find a list of commands. Don't touch it if you have self control issues.

Also, just hang in there, because the black forest is where you unlock things that will give you access to portals, a better ship, a way to farm and cook(meaning better food buffs). If you're worried about carrying too much stuff, you can always drop a workbench and then stash a chest somewhere, mark it on your map, and come back for your stuff later.

I will second Valheim Plus, it basically gives you a lot of options to make the vanilla game less tedious (such as autoFuel and autoDeposit). It's super simple to install, just copy the files into the main folder. Here's the github page which is where you can find the most current release:

https://github.com/Grantapher/ValheimPlus/releases

You will need to run the mod once to generate the config file (called valheim_plus.cfg in the BepInEx/config folder) and then you will need to spend some time editing the config file to turn on and off the options you want.

i had the same experience, i gave up in late black forest stage and recently came back after 6 months -- Im loving it this time and im now onto swamp and mountains. You dont need mods. I tried mods but the update killed them and i didnt bother reinstalling them and TBH its better.

Heres what I did different
- change the setttings to 3x resource drops and low combat (see the other threads on this, there seem to be loads of people whove also realised this)
- change your strategy .. if you mark trolls on your map, you can give them a wide berth .. put your base in meadows far from a troll spawn.
- build up your food so you have honey and (even better) meals. Then you have a lot of energy so its much easier to run away etc. With good food and a brass sword and firearrows, the forest isnt that scary.
- set up outposts. build up a port near your tin to collect it. (not near a troll obvs) Then use the Karve boat to take it back to your main base.
- look at the sun before you leave. if its in the east, its morning. only set out in the morning, if its evening, go to sleep to 'fast forward' til morning.

oh i forgot to add ... portals are a game changer, farming is awesome, the Karve boat is a game changer too and brass weapons are fantastic. youre not far from the game getting MUCH better.

just sounds like you need to prepare more.
-get a good supply of food
-tin spawns by water so if you follow the coast you should come across the dark forest and can make a camp there at the edge. sleep at night and you will get a full day of foraging with little travel time.
-if your going for metal go light with just rag or leather armour and just your pickaxe.
and a bit of food.
you will waste alot of time trying to fight with weapons and armour from the meadows.
and as another note being light lets you easily outrun most dangers. sheathing your weapon (R key) makes you move faster as well
-once you do start getting some ores get a copper pickaxe first and then a copper weapon preferable a blunt damage type. most enemy's are weak to blunt.
with those two as your first items it will make getting more much easier.

breaking into new biomes for the first time can be a slow process so dont rush it.
since your solo you just need to get a bit at a time and slowly build yourself up.

Looks like i may have a yank at it myself based on how the settings are now.
jonnin May 21, 2024 @ 7:29pm
you should not need any mods at all given the server settings. full bags is lack of focus, and I am as guilty as the next, but if you are going out for ore, you can't stop to pick up every rock, stick, mushroom, berry, dwarf eye, .... 20 more things... between you and it or you will never get anywhere. Let it go and focus on your goal of the hour.

As for trolls, you can one-shot them soon enough, but early game they are beefy and do take a while to bring down.

other than focus on the task at hand, see if you can get your metal on ... if you can do the black forest, you get weapon and shield upgrades, home improvements, boats, and all sorts of goodies but the big one is the portal. Once you make a good axe and have a few cores (from the tombs in the forest) you can make a portal to pop back to your home and dump your bags and return quickly, or go home to sleep and return in the morning, rather than trekking across the world every day. You are probably almost there, too. You can actually get them before you get the axe, by tricking a troll into knocking down trees or rolling logs at the trees or finding a boat wreck, but its more aggravation than doing it right unless you just stumble onto the boat wreck.

I prefer this mod that gives Valheim a leveling system. Pretty fun mod. You can pick the stats you want to spec into. If you want an extra 150 carry weight by investing 20 levels into carry weight, you can do that.

Of course, I also play on a higher difficulty to make up for the fact the mod makes the game easier. But that isn't necessary.

Build a stash house (or borrow one of the ruins) and stick anything extra in a chest. Mark it on your map and come back later. If you build it by water you can get it on a boat as well.

Once I got the hoe I went a little crazy making highways and bridges, so my usual go-to was a stash house by the road and once I mined everything around, just do several trips in the cart.

Can't tell you about mods since I haven't played in a while so I don't know what's current.

You don't need mods at all to enjoy this game solo. Especially with the difficulty sliders they added.
