It works more like a pick...

Fun tip. If you are mining copper and take the hoe along with you, you can dig down 1 meter by the deposit and then flatten the terrain and reveal more of the node much faster than using the pick.

It's tricky to learn but you can also raise the terrain fully *above* the deposit and pop the whole thing that way. You see it happen accidentally with silver sometimes.

My favorite non-traditional use is quickly getting my boat off of sandbars. Just hop out, find a deep spot where you can still use tools, pull out the hoe and start flattening. Generally much faster than using a pick, and you can easily get under the boat, which is not possible with a pick.

Man, I have been doing Atgier only runs for a while now. If the hoe was also a polearm, I'd probably never do the run. Because the fun thing about the run is being unable to fight back until I get a troll to mine some copper and tin for me.
