Missing Flamemetal.
I have found various lava, not a single spot has flamemetal. I have been in the ashlands for days now, scouted entire islands found numerous lava pools, some fairly large and not a speck of flame metal to be seen or found yet.... Hence no upgrades or upgrade stations....

most lava pools dont have these flametal pillars they are actually rather rare overall given the small size of the total landmass they are only found inwards the shoreline pools never have them. the good news is : you dont need them anyway.

just follow the green light. clear out the fortress. they ALWAYS contain enough flamemetal to get started. i only mined 3 pillars total. you never get more than about 1 stack per pillar when solo anyway as they just sink way too fast. each fortress contains about 30-60 flamemetal inside the chests and you NEED whats found in those chests to get all the upgrades ANYWAY.

just build a stair to get over the outer wall. there is always atleast 1-2 chests in the inner yard. enough to make the ram to get into the central tower. just kill the spawners first with ranged combat before you jump in. then press bonemass before leaping in.

Only once have I seen a pillar with flamemetal so far. He floats above the sea. When I approached with the ship, he fell into the water and disappeared. Otherwise, I have only gotten Flamemetal from the dwarven buildings so far. Let's see what the fortress will offer.

You might wanna type "genloc" in F5 console.
It's not a cheat and is completely safe to do. What it does is that it will kind of "refresh" your world and generate "locations" that might be missing.

You typically need to do that if your playing on an old world, because of the ashlands update and terrain changes it creates on old worlds.
If you see floating stuff around, type "optterrain" I believe it will repair that kind of stuff.

But try the genloc command and see if it helps, doesn't cost anything.
(or go and get an explanation online of what it does if your afraid of breaking something in your world)

I've found a few of the pillars near my first successful landing , none of them in lava so far.

And I have seen some kind of stronghold with a green glowing light , so I guess I'll try to figure out how to crack that next.

Read posts above - the forts (the green beacons / glowing lights)have a good amt of ore in them plus other goodies. Also above is the easy way to get into them + added bonus keeps walls intact so you can make a nice base inside.
