Boats are just plain annoying
Not the usual 'why is the wind against me' rant, but 'why do they always stick to the shore or tiny rocks like glue?' rant. I seem to spend ridiculous amounts of time trying to work out why my boat won't budge, due to some tiny inaccessible rock under the boat or that it loves to ground itself at every opportunity. Even worse the new boat is too big to push from shore when it gets stuck.

Back to the wind, the angle at which the boat won't budge is around 90' meaning a 1 in 4 chance you have to very slowly turn or go into reverse in the hope you can move. This area of the game is just not fun atm (as well as sea combat being tricky single player).

Not disagreeing. The number of times I get stuck on sandbars and just, spend 5-10 minutes getting unstuck can be frustrating. Worse when you beach on a plains while still going through the Swamp. Trying to unstick a boat with fulings running is. . .an experience to say the least.

The only solution I see is to just steer wide of the shore, and watch the water. You can kinda gauge depth, its just irritating the shoreline is so wonky sometimes you get miles of shallow water that is hard to navigate, or random rocks just beneath the surface.

I prefer to us the hoe on sandbars. Much quicker than other methods. Just hop out and find a spot that you can just barely stand on, and hoe level from there.

That's why I prefer the Karve for tighjt places and scouting possible shortcuts - not only is it more maneuverable but it totally beats the Longboat for the ease at which it can be turned into a cart...

Sailing can be tricky sometimes. We should take into account that the longboat has a deeper draft then say the Carve or the raft. This being said the longboat I use more for deep water exploration and serpent hunting as well as moving ore, whereas the Carve is great for coastal island mapping and river sailing. The wind will push you sideways with sails out at a 90 deg angle while offering slightly faster movement than paddling. Getting unstuck from a sandbar is as easy as hopping out and throwing a pickaxe into the ground in my experience. Just be careful not to hit the boat LOL.
Fair winds and following seas mates. May the tides be with you.

Ancient sailors had similar complaints. False islands, sandbars, random shallow seas and rocky treacherous coastlines were constant fears. None of that got nerfed for them even after their complaints of how unfun or difficult it was.

Not just ancient sailors. We partially grounded a 40' sailboat in Corpus Christi Bay many years ago when they brought in the USS Lexington, which significantly altered the seabed. We were able to get it free, but it wasn't fun.

We were all "rubbernecking" the aircraft carrier, but it's not hard to do if you get near shore.

Nearly did the same thing in San Diego bay trying to get out of the way of an active duty aircraft carrier that was coming into port and taking up most of the channel. You really don't want to get too close to something like that...

I am the same thinking, smaller and more agile. Raft could be considered a slo-mo variant.

Imagine how bland all the stories would have been growing up, instead of what we go that sparks the imagination.

Creatures swallowing ship whole, would not have been added to all those old maps.
Sailing off the end of the world keep the peasants in check and out of the water. The British probably weren't the first to kidnap new sailors, having them, unable to swim was a bonus, makes it harder for them to get away.
Trying to bring back a non spherical world as fact, from what I heart, it's still a movement, so who knows I could have been wrong all this time. Prove me wrong!

In modern times though, imagine how much we would have avoided space if it was easy....or as some wise lady once said. Why do people say to 'grow a pair'. If you really wanna get tough, grow a vagina as those things can take a pounding!

I for one am glad to see a game where I do not require balls to play.
