Should I keep playing as a solo player or wait?
So I just reached the mountain biome, which has been kicking my ass. And I thought the swamp was hard! I've gotten a lot of joy out of this game so it wouldn't bother me to call it quits now, and I'd still drop a very favorable review, but at this point I'm just wondering if it's worth it to try and finish the content or wait until 1.0? It seems like the difficulty and grind are just going to continue to ramp up to ridiculous levels and I'm not really feeling like that's going to be a good use of my time. I also don't want to cheese the game like I've read about, in order to farm more efficiently.

Also, will I be able to play 1.0 with my character and world, or will I have to start over?
Because if it's the latter then I definitely might as well just wait.

Entirely up to you. If you're having fun, keep going. If not, then give it a rest for awhile.

The plains are more difficult than the mountains. Each biome is designed to ramp up a bit. A lot of it is a learning experience for the player. I'll bet that if you come back later and start fresh again it will seem easier next time.
You should keep playing, but get your priorities in order. What do you want out of this game? Do you want to build an impenetrable base? Do you want to collect one of every single item the game has to offer, fully upgraded? Or do you just want to get through the game to the final boss? Once you do that, then you can assess whether or not you're willing to put in the hours to achieve those goals. I will tell you now that it's going to be something of a grind if you're interested in having a fully upgraded arsenal of all weapons, armors and tools. Don't despair, it's possible to achieve, but I'm just saying that it might take a huge chunk of time to realize.

Merely completing each biome is a perfectly reasonable goal and attainable for any solo player.

I really just want to complete the game. Don't care about upgrading everything, although building a nice base is enjoyable. Not sure I would agree about any solo player being able to complete it though, from what I've experienced so far. This game is absolutely brutal even compared to Soulsborne games. Not everyone has the patience or skill.

Don't sell yourself short. If you convince yourself you don't have the skill or tenacity to progress further solo, then what follows is just a self-fulfilling prophecy.

You have to believe you have the capacity to improve your play and adapt to the challenges the game throws at you.

I've seen a few posts from people on their second run asking if the game got easier or if it was just them. It was just them. When you play you get experience, and then you get better. Player experience is more important in this game than character xp.

I wasn't selling myself short at all. I'm accustomed to immensely challenging games and I know I could complete the content if I decided to devote my time to it. I was only arguing that a lot of people would find this game too difficult, especially solo, which is true considering how many give up early on.

Alright, man, you just made it seem like you didn't believe you could get beyond where you're at currently.

You could always tweak the World settings to make things easier. I've never tweaked any myself, but my understanding is you can change combat difficulty as well as making the grind for resources far less intense.

With enough preparation, you can definitely finish the mountain area content.

A quick checklist before entering the mountain area and lower the difficulty:

* Have you fully upgraded your iron armor and weapons of choice?

* You will need a bow for shooting flying drakes. Also take your preferred melee weapon.

* Have you found turnip seeds in the swamp?

* Have you cooked food that uses turnips in the the recipe?

* Have you prepared Frost Resistance Mead?

* Do not enter or stay in mountains at night. Much stronger enemies spawn at night.

When fighting with melee weapons in the mountains try and do it on fairly level ground. It is impossible to melee wolves that are uphill or downhill from you on a slope, particularly steep slopes.

I know I could, but...that would be the coward's way out. And we can't have that kind of thing around here. Either I do it the right way, as god intended, or I don't do it at all.

* Not fully but getting there. Any weapon you recommend? I'm running the same upgraded iron mace that I had from the swamp, and iron chest and helm that haven't yet been upgraded.

* Yes.

* Yes.

* Yes.

* Nope. I made a base there and watched what happens during the night, and I noped outa there and went right back into my portal lol. I think I'll just...omit all that.

And yeah, the wolves are very hard to hit when above or below. I've tried to hit them with bow & arrow as much as I can before engaging in melee. Hard to do though when they swarm you.
I personally prefer iron mace because I leveled up blunt skills in the Black Forest and Swamp . Other weapons are also good if they suit your play style.

I am not good at combat, so I fully upgrade my weapons and armor before entering the next biome. I do die at times if I am swarmed by wolves.

You can stay in Mountains at night if you have a strong base. Some night enemies can jump. I prefer to use portal and sleep in my main base.

Also, for convenience in World Modifier you can enable portal of metal ores.
Atgeir is the weapon of choice. It pretty much rules everything including Plains, and some argue maybe even Mistlands. It completely fails in Ashlands.

But up until then, the atgeir is a lifesaver. The secondary spin attack pretty much stuns enemies in an area around you, and you can quickly poke at least one, maybe even more to death. A godsend against wolves.

Edit: The atgeir works wonders against trolls and lox.

Hell yeah. I like poking things to death. Will try. Thanks.
You're very welcome! Be aware that the atgeir eats stamina like nothing, so you should always eat the best food you can make and avoid unnecessary sprinting (an advice that is useful in general).
