Buying a dedicated server
Hi, I'd like to buy a dedicated server which will work okay for 10 ppl. Most providers have a number of options with different specs, I wonder if anyone can help me to figure out what would be enough. How much RAM do you need, what processor is enough etc.

Thank you.

I don't know, but you can figure it out, use an old laptop as a server, like we did, and play. We didn't need much, but we were only 5 players. That will probably be the quickest and most accurate.

You don't need a powerful machine. I would even say the server specs are not very relevant.

Valheim has this weird p2p protocol for online play: the 1st player to enter an area of the map becomes the "host" for this area. It doesn't matter if your server has fiber, or if everybody in your party has great internet. It's enough to have this one guy in Australia while everyone else is in DC to f up the game for everyone.

Just go with the smallest tier.

Thanks. This way I can simply use my laptop but I believe I've read somewhere that if I am to make a server on my account, I can't play the game from the same account on another rig. Is it correct?

You can go into your steam library and look above your game list and there you'll find a drop down menu filled with "games" or "games and tools" or so. You need to have "tools" enabled to find the "Valheim Dedicated Server" in your library. Install it on a seperate machine and run it there.

Based on older comments in the Bugs & Technical Issues subforum, you're going to want to make sure that your server has a minimum of 8 GB RAM. Though Valheim is not generally a resource-heavy game, the server can fill memory pretty quickly (especially on more established maps). Other than that, any mid-range processor should be able to run the package just fine and 10-20 GB of storage space should give you plenty to be able to host maps through years of exploration.

You should be able to install, run, and update the Dedicated Server package as anonymous, so you don't need a seperate account for it (there was some problems with this for a little while last year, where running the server confused Steam into thinking you were already playing the game on another machine, but that was fixed IIRC).

p2p with 10 players might get some lag depending on where you are from. One of the reasons is routing on the side of ISP... buying dedicated server can help (not always thou). If you host from your pc or a laptop getting everyone on a VPN (not the normal kind, but a service like zerotier1) where everyone plays as it was a LAN can help as well.

gl!

Does it need to be Windows?
