tar pool draining
i have used a furling camp to settle in but it is right beside a tar pit.
maybe 5 steps.
So ?? now i know how to handle growths etc i thought all had to do to stop more growths is drain the swamp.
ha ha, no drain the tar pool.
pick a channel down hill and all the way , ie deeper than the tar pit and all is well.
except this doesn't work.
i walk around the top of the tar pit, after digging a drain etc and find some puddles like rain puddles on a road.
these make the squishy sound so i dug all of these out.
still the growths keep spawning.
i am using the test valheim, that might have something to do with it so any of you lot know the trick.
put a stone floor over the top.?
put a bonfire in it?
dunno.
i await the clever minds of the forum users to give me a clue.
I have just started the chook pen so don't want that knocked down
i planted dozens of trees in the way and this helps a lot .
I built a higher defence wall two walls high to help but want to drain the damn thing .

added since.
this tar pit, if you walk around it , say 2 or 3 metres around it there is tar puddles and you know this as there is a splash.
also the depth of this pit isnt much higher than a nearby creek so cant be drained completely.
and these puddles are everywhere so to much to dig out.
I have taken this advse ad placed work benches around and in the pool but i will just move, to hard. better things to do so thank you folks for your input.

Growths will keep spawning at a tar pit. This is supposed to allow you to farm tar without having to constantly find new pools to drain. Sure, it's a bit annoying and will only give you a few instead of several stacks, but it's an infinite supply.

Mobs don't spawn if you are not there, so your animals will be safe in your absence.
Recommended you don't build stuff nearby if you are worried about it.

thanks for your advice.
this pit i, don't need, as there are 3 pits a little further away i can get tar so i need to stop this one.
Yep I may need to move camp.
I am thinking , not to far away, by boat, there is a dark forest on the coast, and mist lands behind that with a high'ish mountain in the mist so i could build up the mountain.
but i have to dig big holes for the um the stone creatures as there isn't any hard to get to ruins.
idea is to keep away from the mist seekers all about. don't know how to fight them yet, well i killed two so far but aided by a wolf or two and a blue light tower thing i could run around to hide and shoot with frost arrows.

You can block spawns with a workbench. Or a list of other objects: https://valheim.fandom.com/wiki/Player_base
I just put a ward in the middle of a tar pit I wanted blocked and covered it with walls to break line of sight with any wandering enemies to keep them from aggro'ing.

I let the fulings or nearby lox take the growths and then come back and place 3 workbench around it to prevent the re-spawns. I only drain the pit if there is something I want that is stuck in the tar or if I still need the tar itself. I've had lox come back and squash the workbenches only to have the growths re-spawn and take on the lox. And the cycle repeats ....

build a bunch of campfire around the or inside the drained pit. they dont even have to burn. done. no more growth spawns.

works the same for all enemies aside raid spawns they act differently and will use farther away spawn points if you block the close to base ones. compleltly blocking raid spawns requires a giant spawnblocked area but is also possible.

I drain the tar, then use the hoe to raise the terrain over the spawn points above the level the lox and fulings can reach, and then cover the raised terrain with workbenches or other spawn preventing base items. Deathsquitos don't attack the work benches and nothing else that spawns in the plains can reach them after that.

Raising the terrain also buries the squishy parts and you can build on the raised terrain if you want to.

Rising the terrain is quite expensive though. Lox and Fulings ignore stuff that is surrounded with a pallisade, so this is my usual go-to.

I have tons of extra rocks in cairns at my bases and portal hubs. Left overs from mining copper and silver and killing greydwarves in the black forest. So its not at all expensive. Even if it was expensive for me I would still do it if I'm planning on building any structures in that location. If not I drain the tar for shingles and mark the spot on the minimap with a pin If I need/want to farm more tar and then leave the space as is.

The problem with using pallisades is fulings and lox WILL attack and destroy stake walls if you are within their perception range (they don't have to see you they can hear you and sound travels farther than sight). They will also attack and destroy stake walls if they can perceive tames on the other side or if they can see barley or flax growing.

On top of that creatures spawned by an event/raid will destroy your stake walls. They head for the center of the raid circle and will attack/destroy any target that comes into their perception range or blocks their path. They target player faction objects first which is you, your tames, and your plants.

Deathsquitos can fly over stake walls and if there is another tar pit nearby growths can jump over stake walls too.
