taming : worth it?
Looked a bit through the valheim wiki for the basics of taming and currently i'm not sure it's worth it for me (casual playtrough).
This might be different the more difficult you play, but for casuals it seems not worth the time (from a simple efficiency point of view, fun is subjectiv).
Is this something for immersiv+ mode?
Is this something for large groups?

Thanks

I generally see it as a checklist/personal fun thing. If you're trying to get materials, in the time it takes to tame them, you could have been hunting and gotten plenty that way. I do see how it could be useful for large groups of friends, though.

A friend of mine does like to tame a lot, though. Has a large group of boars so he can easily get plenty of meat, which he feeds to an army of wolves. He finds it fun to have literally 50+ wolves roaming the fields of our humble base.

Depends on your level of experience and personal goals. I always tame. I build a hut and a pen on day 1 of a new play through and have 2 no star boars trapped by the end of day 2. I spend the next few days getting them tame while back at base while I'm looking for a large flat spot close to water for a main base. When I find that spot I build a pen that I can easily convert to a barn and look for 1 and 2 star boars to lure back. That base gets a hut that will become my seed shack and a palisade perimeter. When I get core wood and my antler pick I build a 2 story lodge and a full barn and raise an earthen wall around the area I've flattened.

Don't needed (for solo or group).
Does it worth it ?
Guess it take too much time for the gains.
Exception would be if you manage to get 2stars wolfs packs following you everywhere, it make the game trivial (or at least, it does at some point).
Otherwise... Not so much useful on normal settings.
Provided ressources from taming is useless/easier to find by just hunting mobs.
Steeds are a joke (can't port with ya, take far too much dmg to be usefull for long).

That's one of the points i'm most curious about, how long do the tames survive.
I mean what's the point to tame something 2-3 hours and then it's dead within minutes, probably because you made a mitake, but also (first playtrough) because you don't know the new biom and how to deal with it.
As example the wolves, currently we (brother and i) play the mountain biom, get our first silver item to max quality, but from my little experience on plains biom i doubt that the wolves even 2 star wolves will survive this for long.

I'm taming everything I can get. As long as you keep them save, they will survive. The problem for me is to slaughter them (boars and chickens), so I keep them just to have something around.

My loxes have survived everything... but lox riding is surprisingly disappointing.

My wolves died to a bat raid. Guess the wolf area should have had a roof!

I do recommend taming boars because an early supply of boar meat is pretty nice.

the main idea behind tames is not combat. there is really only 3 combat tames. asksvns and wolves and lox.

and lox cannot have stars.

once you have a 2 star you can infinitely breed more of them. so survival doesnt matter.

the big issue is transport for anything but asksvins and chickens.

chickens make it so you never need to farm for feathers ever again. and they are really easy to get aswell.

a 2 star wolf or asksvin (later) is a force to not be underestimated.

all tames suck vs flyers. but they can deal with anything else just fine.

the problem is findeing a 2 star takes a long time. its worse for wolfs due to the night only condition.

longterm i say the only 2 tames worth it are chickens and a 2 star asksvin. the reason is you can keep them on a new world in the future. all other tames will be left behind anyway. you can also easy transport them anywhere you wanna. unlike the other 3.

boars are the worst tame wise. and they have only the function of resources. wolf and lox are the worst for resources. wild lox give the same amount of materials. and wolf stuff is too quickly obsolete.

starred tames are fantastic for food sources within thier biome. as they can drop multiples of thier meat at once.

That was my take on it. On my 1st or 2nd playthrough I gave it a try thinking it would be an easy way to farm meat and leather. Just felt like too much effort for too little gain. Since I'm big on exploring, it's just easier to hit targets of opportunity along the way.

That said, CHICKENS are another story. No taming involved. I feed them dandelions since they are plentiful and in return get an endless supply of feathers (for the hundred of frost arrows I'll use) and all-you-can-eat Honey Glazed Chicken! Practically effortless.

Getting 2 star tames is more about accomplishment and prestige.

I've gotten everything so far except the 2 star askvin. I have a 1 star, but the 2 star is proving elusive.

Boars are great for early food and scraps, wolves are great for protection, chickens are great for feathers and food and portability, askvins are great because you can ride them across lava.

2 star Askvins work just like wolves. Only spawn at night and will despawn if you have not started the taming process.

"Similar to the Wolf, Level 3 (two-star) Asksvins only spawn at night. Like any creatures spawned at night, Level 3 Asksvins will attempt to flee the active area and de-spawn during daytime hours if the taming process has not begun. This can be prevented by either (A) trapping them in a pit or pen that they cannot escape (and staying within 64 meters of them) or (B) by starting the taming process, after which they will never de-spawn."

If you are looking during the day thats probably why you havent found one yet.

large groups yes, not necessary in solo

by the time i start swamps I have a chest and a half worth of deer/boar meat and hides that mostly wont get used

one wolf raid takes care of wolf jerky

Another note:

The latest PTB lets you ride askvins in Lava. If you are not on the Public Test Branch be careful, as the lava will definatly kill you when riding an askvin.

"* Players no longer take lava damage while riding Asksvin"

in general, no. There's too many things to do in this game. Meat and skins will be plentyful, just from moving around

Taming is very helpful, from active base defence to easy deforestation, and now the Asksvin negate lava damage, I think the benefits outweigh the drama taming them.
