Do I need to make a pit to tame an askavin?
Title basically. I don't want to do it that way because it's cheesy to me. Already have a gra-whatever it's called pen made.

The problem is that an asksvin is strong enough to break stone, grausten, marble and so on.

A possible (but maybe risky) alternative might be to just throw food to their spawn point, run away until they stop chasing you and sneak back until the taming process starts.
Stay hidden until it's done.

But in the end it will turn out that a pit or an earth wall is still the best you can do.
And further they are in great danger in ashlands in general. If you are unfortunate to have a dverger spawn next to your asksvin in taming process they would get killed pretty easily. And once they are tamed they also got a big target on their heads from everything around.
I think you're gonna have to swallow your pride on this one, chief, and dig a taming pit - or go without.
Either way, I highly recommend the potion of Animal Whispers.

Plus, taming the asksvin is only step 1. You want two to start making eggs and while they are doing that they need to be protected with a roof and/or a shield.

Bring those eggs to a safe area and once again a pit is safest to breed more as even your tamed herd seem to have a mind of their own and will bust down any fence you try to pen them in with to go after neck, deer, boar and any other unfortunate Meadows creature that wanders by.

And if you are going to expend the effort to tame some asksvin, go for the 1-star or, if you are truly lucky, the 2-star. Breed about 100 of them and hatch the eggs in a Fader enclosure. The Emerald Flame only lasts a few minutes against the thundering herd

I have one in my pen though it's a normal one. Worked out fine. Maybe not if it was two star who knows.

If you build a pen for your asksvin at home, you should make sure that there is no opening. No gap to see anything outside. As long as they don't notice creatures walking along outside, they won't break the walls.

I tamed all my Asksvins in cleared fortresses. You don't need to make a pit, but it's easier that way.

Not an option when i'm setting up a farm to actually be able to progress

Doesnt have to be a pit. You could also just raise the earth alternatively as a walling off.

Or you could change settings in your world modifier settings to cause aggressive creatures to be passive until attacked as well but that's not for everyone.

If you do try to tame one in a pit, you may need to actually place a level floor to get them to tame or breed. I've set with one for an hour and wondered why it was not taming and noticed it was hyperactive and wouldn't eat the food. After I killed it, modified the pit and put a floor in, the next one tamed successfully. If you are set on making a pen, I'd make sure nothing can see in or out of it as much as possible and I'd make it double thick on the walls as if I recall Asksvin have some heavy damage and it is a type that none of the building materials are resistant to.

I meant keeping them in a fortress like they suggested. I'm not ready to take one on. I'm farming askavin so i can actually make the bombs to get flametal.
