Valheim

Valheim

are game files compatible between operating systems?
Hi,
I've been playing Valheim for years on steam and just bought a mac minio m4 to well, try out a mac. Just curious if I bought Valheim on the apple store, can I backup my game world and character files from windows/steam onto a flash drive and then copy over to a Valheim installation on the mac? Are they the same file types? Looks like the file types in windows are .fch for characters and types .db and .fwl for worlds.

no idea, good question. you might first try just saving to cloud, then installing the game onto your mac steam?
and do a steam backup i suppose as well
I believe electricdawn knows how to do this. Hopefully he'll see your thread and be able to step you through the process.
The files are identical. If you want specific advice on how to do it, let me know. I'll walk you through it.
Thanks all for the replies. I might give it a shot.

Does Valheim run in Wine / Proton? How is it on Linux? Or is there a native version for 'NIX operating systems?
Valheim Mac is a native game for MacOS. I'm sure this is true for Linux as well, as Unity (the engine used to build Valheim) is a platform agnostic IDE.

Game handle crossplay, so save files should be compatible. It would be weird if it weren't the case.
It works and surprisingly well considering the mac mini is about half the size of the rx6950xt graphics card in my PC although the mac mini m4 gets pretty hot while playing, like a little toaster LOL. To wrap this up for anyone who might ask, just install Valheim from the app store on a mac, start the game, and click the player log button displayed on the bottom left of the start screen. The mac will minimize Valheim and display the log file which is located a few directories below a hidden Library directory which prevents it from being displayed through a normal finder search unless you happen to enable viewing it while in that directory so saves a lot of time looking around. Once you see that mentioned player log you will also see the characters_local and worlds_local directories to place your saved files from Steam into.
The path is \mac HD\users\%yourusername%\Library(hidden)\Containers\Valheim\Data\Library\Application Support\com... and you will see the valheim installation.
The correct data path for App Store Valheim is:
~/Library/Containers/com.coffeestain.valheim/Data/Library/Application\ Support/com.coffeestain.valheim/

The correct data path for Steam Valheim is:
~/Library/Application\ Support/IronGate/Valheim/

You can make the "Library" folder visible in the Finder, by right-clicking inside the window of your user folder and selecting "Show View Options". A small window will open, and there should be an option to select "Show Library Folder".
