Mistlands. How do 'you' play?
Right, I have played this game for several years and many hours but i'm in no hurry to conquer a biome and take a lot of time exploring and enjoying the game.

The time has come to start on the Mistlands and ermmmmm well just ERMMMMM!

It's not right to say its broken if its by design but ermmmmmm I cant see in dark or thorough solids which the fog appears to be....... i'm just not that clever.

I think it should be renamed the Blindlands lol! Cant see ♥♥♥♥!

I have read a lot of this subject, its hard enough going into a new biome with the equipment /food gap and trying to close that, BUT doing it blind its kinda tricky.

I like the play games as designed if possible.

Do you guys just say screw it and get the mod or persevere being blind with all sorts of nasties attacking you and just die all over the place ?

I play as the devs designed. Equip a wisplight and enter the mist.

But dont you need to get somewhere it that biome to get the Wisplight?

Nope. Wisplight is crafted with silver and a wisp. A wisp is collected at night from a Wisp fountain, which is built by the player with some stone and a torn spirit, which is the drop from Yagluth, the boss of the plains.
Vanilla, no mods. The only thing I changed was to mute the music so I could hear what's going on. As with all biomes, until you know what you are dealing with go slow and take note of everything. Figure out how stamina works in that terrain fast. Eventually you will get used to the mist. You have to craft a wisp fountain with what you got from the previous boss to craft the wisp light.

The wisplight could stand to clear a bit more mist than it does. Chasing hares is nigh impossible when they can lose you from just a few meters away
Vanilla, default settings. Put the wisplight on and go in cautiously; since it's not my first rodeo, though, I'm more inclined to take risks I wouldn't if I were completely fresh-faced, like actively picking fights with gjalls and soldiers and scaling the cliffs like a mountain goat before getting the feather cape.

Still gets me into trouble sometimes; sometimes not, but that's part of the game.

my mistland strategy that i think work well.
1). Build the Hammer named "frostner" and upgrade it 4 times.
This hammer can freeze the seekers so they become slow and then they are not so dangerous... its a really good tip
2). mistland is a wird place, but you dont have to get up high so often, try to run in the lower areas of mistland typical that is where you find the stuff you need like brain inside the black skull, and also the abandoned mines.
3). use your ears and listen.. it can help you allot knowing what is around the corner.
4). there is no shame in running/jumping up on top of a little cliff and stand there and shoot arrows at soldier seekers below.
5). get some decent food that give you stamina.
6). use the run and roll feature. When the enemy attack roll away and hit it with your hammer and then they freeze.
You maybe should consider NOT to wear your most heavy armour but maybe something a bit lighter.. this help allot with stamina.
Also maybe only carry the hammer and avoid the shield it will just slow you down.
7). ALWAYS build a teleport when you land on the beach with your ship so if you die you can at least get back to the continent.
8). carry 1 extra teleport in your pocket that dosent have any name... then dump it now and then so you can spawn once yo uget a bit away from the ship.
it help you allot not having to run allot to but can spawn closer to where you died.
Also you can setup this thing right otuside the door of the abandoned mined ;-)
9) if you are chased by enemys you can run to the dwarf and they will help kill it.
10) AVOID the big flying thing... its VERY deadly and you often end up fighting it, and the leaches, and seekers at the same time while being on fire..
if there is a dwarf camp nearby okay attack it and run and hide inside their building and make them kill it for you.. but els avoid it. ;-)
11). super tip regarding killing the queen.. You can hit though a wall with a giant sledge hammer and damae the queen while you are in safety.. find a youtube video about how to kill the queen this way its pretty easy.
12) maybe coinsider NOT to block the enemy when they attack.. It uses allot of stamina.. then its better to Roll away and attack with 1-2 swings with your frostner hammer. It can also be a good idea to kind of walk/run around and enemy they dont turn so fast

I crafted the Wisplight after i defeated Yagluth. with the wisplight its easy to run threw the mistland.

ok, I will man up and admit to it:
I cheat. I looked at my map online to get rough locations for the boss summon item instances and the boss alter.

past that, I cleared a spot on the beach with fishing and set up shop there, farm, repairs and storage, sap gathering, fishing all in one little mini base. Once I could I cleared the mist there with tons of those little lights. I got extra lucky and recycled a blackstone tower for this, but I could have made my own just as well.

once you have a safe haven (and it should also be a fort in case you need to retreat), farm the "just got here" stuff. Youll want bug meat and rabbit for new foods, then start looking for black marble and skulls full of mush. Locate a sap extractor thingy from the dwarves. Cut down the new trees. Also, figure out how to successfully fight the enemies you run into.

Once settled in and confident, then you hunt (erm, walk to) the instances and pick them clean, build your new armor/crafting stations/weapons/etc and so on.

As far as not being able to see, knowing where to go even in a crude sense saved my sanity. However if you are determined to do it the hard way and find your instances, know this: the instances are guarded by groups of 3 common bugs. If you find a lot of bugs in one spot, mark it and search hard in a good radius.
I'm trying to remember how I approach it but it's all kinda misty atm.

But seriously, look for lights, listen for trouble. Set portals here and there. Plant mist torches when mining skulls.

Bile bombs are your best friend for hunting hares. Clear areas by building wisp torches.
Thanks for all the input guys.

I now know my problem is that I have not killed the plains boss!

I'm trying not to kill bosses on my main world as i hate raids and the random mobs that spawn at night.

It looks like i have no choice now! :0(

lol, odin gave you a grenade staff for good reason.

For the OP: sometimes the forums can be less than helpful, but I suppose you've figured it out already. You beat the Plains boss and receive the recipe for the wisp fountain attractor thingy. the purple one that looks like an upside-down chili. Set it up just inside some mist, making sure your HUD tells you that you are standing in the mistlands. Once it is night, slowly some wisps will come to swirl about it. Stand there and catch them. You'll get the recipe for your much needed WISPLIGHT.
On my first play through I stayed as close to the edges as possible while looking for Mistlands materials that would make mistalnds easier to survive similar to the way I did in other biomes, (like looking for turnip seeds on the edges of the swamps and upgrading my foods before going farther). Set up farms close to borders, build the feather cape, etc. and only ventured further into the mist when I was ... over equipped to start doing so.

Once I finished that play through I downloaded mistbegone and haven't looked back. I'm never doing a default mistlands run again.

Just kill Yagluth on another world. The drops are what matters.
