Is growth the absolutely most annoying enemy?

Not the most dangerous (although they can definitely contribute to your death). But tarred is just such self-perpetuating misery. Being tarred by one invites all the other growths to catch up with you and tar you too. And they aggro pretty easily from far away. Running into a bunch of growths is just a bad day in Plains...

You can block the subsequent attacks if you can find them. I'm not sure if they make you fat roll when tarred. If not, that could be a way of getting out.

They are definitely pretty annoying though, especially if they take you by surprise.

Dodge roll works perfectly fine on them even when tarred. Tarred doesn't slow down the roll or reduce its distance. Roll 3 times and you have enough range to switch to the bow and fire arrows even if you are up against 3 of them.

They are very easy to deal with. Just sidestep until they have shot their tar stuff and then sprint to them and smack em or just kill them with frostarrows from afar.

the whole tar pit experience, from growths to draining them, is annoying. So yes, possibly. Though grey dwarves get at least an honorable mention just for sheer persistence and quantity.
